๐ค What Are the Real Odds Your Kid Swims in the Olympics?!
Your kid is probably not going to the Olympics. And that's the best news I can give you. I know how that sounds. Stay with me. Your kid probably won't get the full D1 ride either, or swim professionally. That's not me being negative... that's just the math. Only about 3 in 100 high-school swimmers ever swim NCAA Division 1, and a full-ride swimming scholarship is rarer still. The odds of going PRO are wayyyy below 1000:1... no matter how fast they are at 13. Here's why it's good news, and it's not to crush a dream. Something clicked for me reading a business newsletter, of all places. The writer pointed out that almost every business owner dreams of selling their company one day.. but only about 1 in 1'000 ever actually does. And in chasing that exit, people spend their whole career sacrificing the thing that was valuable the entire time, and often end up with neither. Swap "selling the company" for "going pro" and you've described a lot of swim families. Because here's what's valuable RIGHT NOW, guaranteed, win or lose: A kid who learns to lose and come back. Who builds a work ethic most adults never find. Who has a team, a body that moves, a reason to get up early, and a thing that is unmistakably theirs. That payoff is real whether or not the Olympic one ever shows up. So don't optimize your kid's entire childhood around a 0.1% outcome and burn out the joy that would have paid off either way. Let it count now. And I genuinely want to know, so be honest: if someone could tell you for certain your kid will never swim past high school... would you still want them in this sport? And why? Hoping to get an interesting conversation going in the comments! ๐ PS: Academy training tomorrow will be live from Mallorca!! ๐ด
