START HERE- Welcome
👋 Welcome! If you’re an NP student overwhelmed by how much you’re expected to know, you’re in the right place. I’m Nikkie, an Acute Care NP and NP educator behind Nikkie the NP. My goal here is simple: Stop memorizing random crap. Start learning how to think like a provider. 🧠 This community focuses on mastering the 3Ps: Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Physical Assessment, with an emphasis on actually applying what you know and using diagnostic reasoning. Expect: 🧠 Simple breakdowns of complex concepts 💊 Pharm that actually makes sense 🩺 Clinical reasoning and application 📚 Study strategies and practice questions 🔥 A little tough love along the way This is a community, so ask questions, participate, and share your wins. 👇 Introduce yourself and tell us what you’re studying and what you struggle with most. Let’s get to work. 💪

I was a registered nurse for 12 years. I graduated with my FNP in December and now work as Renal NP. My FNP program was basically self taught so I am here to correct things I learned wrong and continue to grow in my new role. I am confident to admit I don't know everything and boy am I overwhelmed most days. Being in a specialized role, I don't want to lose things so I joined this community to stay up to date on common themes I may not see day to day.

@Nikkie Miller yes please.
Question of the Day
You're reviewing labs (in whatever setting your normal is) and you notice a Potassium of 5.9. What is your next step (make this setting specific).

Renal NP here...depends on the setting your in but first step is to see if patient is symptomatic (palpitations, fatigue, tingling, N/V/D). Second step is to redraw lab. Kidney function is how I base the urgency of repeating labs however, i usually always repeat within 48 hours. If I have a CKD stage 4-5 patient with chronic hyperKalemia, I'm not as concerned as a CKD stage 2. Third step, review medications for ACE/ARB, Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (kerendia or spironolactone), recent or current Bactrim use etc. I never do EKG's even inpatient but as an old ICU nurse I agree with that answer too if nothing above applies.
