🐕‍🦺 Service Dog Public Access: What Businesses Can (and Can’t) Ask
One of the most common questions we receive is: “What are businesses legally allowed to ask me when I’m out in public with my service dog?” Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), if it is not obvious that your dog is a service dog, a business may ask only two questions: ✅ 1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? ✅ 2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? That’s it! 🚫 Businesses may not: - Ask about your disability. - Ask for medical records. - Ask for certification or an ID card. - Ask your dog to demonstrate its task. 🛑 When can a business ask a service dog team to leave? A business may ask the dog to leave if: 🐾 The dog is out of control and the handler is unable to regain control. 🐾 The dog is not housebroken. 🐾 The dog poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others based on its actual behavior. A business cannot ask you to leave simply because: - They have a “No Pets” policy. - Someone is afraid of dogs. - Someone has allergies. - They don’t understand the ADA laws. - You don’t have an ID card or certification. 📹 What should you do if you believe your rights are being violated? ✅ Stay calm and remain respectful. ✅ If possible, begin recording a video of the interaction. ✅ Ask for clarification on why you are being asked to leave. ✅ Make note of the date, time, location, and the names of any employees involved. Having a calm, factual record of what happened can be very helpful if you need to address the situation later. Knowledge is power! The more we understand our rights and responsibilities as service dog handlers, the better prepared we are to advocate for ourselves while also representing the service dog community in a positive way 💙 ❓Current Service Dog handlers - Have you been denied access or has a business asked you inappropriate questions? Tell us what happened and how you dealt with it 👇

Thank you so much for this helpful breakdown of the ADA law re: service animals. Two questions... 1) What if your employer is in healthcare, like direct patient care? I am anticipating that there may be multiple areas in which a service dog may not be allowed due to infection prevention/allergies, but would they be allowed at a nursing station? Or do they have to be at your side at all times? 2) Do you have to disclose that you have a service dog and might be bringing them during interviews? TIA!

@Amanda Taulborg thank you SO much for such an in-depth response! That is tremendously helpful. I know as far as my current NICU position, a service dog would not be allowed due to infection control. I just want to start forward thinking/brainstorming about after ________ comes home and planning my next contract. I appreciate you so much! 💙
How We Prep Service Dogs for Grooming 🐕‍🦺
✂️🐕‍🦺 Grooming prep starts LONG before the actual grooming appointment. One of the ways we help prepare future service dogs for grooming is through early desensitization to the sounds, sights, vibrations, and handling involved in the grooming process. In this video, we’re introducing a puppy to an electric toothbrush while it’s turned OFF first. The toothbrush safely mimics grooming clippers and helps puppies begin building positive associations with grooming equipment. The goal right now isn’t perfection — it’s confidence. 🙌 ✔️ Let them investigate ✔️ Mark and reward calm curiosity ✔️ No pressure ✔️ No forcing We want puppies learning: 🐶 “Weird objects predict good things.” This kind of foundation work helps create dogs that are more relaxed during grooming, vet care, handling, and everyday life experiences later on. For service dogs especially, cooperative care and confidence around handling is a HUGE skill set to build early. 🐕‍🦺

@Amanda Taulborg Thanks for the thoughtful response. I also lean towards the Dremel. How often are you trimming the nails?

I went on my long run today, but with my full medical pack... and am dreaming of the day when my dog can come with me to have that added sense of security. Wishing you all a happy weekend whether you were celebrating or relaxing. 💙

@Amanda Taulborg It has a bright red "medical" tag on it, with epi pen, rescue meds, an emergency info card for first responders, and a copy of my vEds emergency kit and standing medical orders in a waterproof bag. And always always a good medical ID!
🐾 Sandy’s first trip to the skate park 🛹💛
Sandy and her handler Reagan absolutely rocked training today! New environment. Big sounds. Moving boards. And Sandy showed up ready to learn. She earned positive reinforcement the whole way—food rewards, praise, pets, and plenty of encouragement. She also got a well-earned “Free Dog” release for listening confidently and being such a good girl. Desensitization is all about slow introductions. Balancing distractions and new environments with: - positive reinforcement - clear handling and guidance - breaks - fun - and extra love 💛 That’s how confidence is built. Sandy is learning how to be big, brave, and awesome—one experience at a time—and she’s well on her way to becoming an incredible service dog.

I'm still a hooman in waiting to know who I will be paired with (Amanda, the wait is killllling me!!), but this is Teddy who I have been watching over Christmas and NY. He loves his elephant, cozy blankets, hopping out of his harness like a little goat (so stinking cute 🥰) and a good game of fetch.

@Amanda Taulborg you just delivered me Christmas. I am already in love with Sandy, and even though I don't know Ollie I know I will love him too. 😭 Teddy is a mini poodle, though he looks and acts way more like a snack size labradoodle. I don't think it would have been feasible even if the cross breading was mini poodle x lab, he is only 10 pounds!
