LIVE CHAT - Daily Canine Health Assessment: How to Perform a Proper Head-to-Tail Examination
Do you know what brick-red, pale, blue, or tacky gums can tell you? How about safely checking your dog's temperature? What a corneal reflex is and why it's important? Your dog can't tell you when something is wrong—but they often show subtle signs long before a medical emergency develops. Join us for this FREE one-hour live lecture on Thursday July 23rd at 7 PM EST where we'll walk through how to perform a complete daily canine health assessment. This practical session is designed for pet owners, sport dog handlers, and working dog teams who want to become more confident in recognizing when their dog may not be "quite right." We'll cover topics including: - Performing a complete head-to-tail examination - How to safely obtain your dog's vital signs - Understanding what is normal vs. abnormal Whether you're preparing for a weekend hike, heading to training, deploying on a search, or simply caring for your family pet, knowing your dog's normal baseline can help you identify problems early and seek veterinary care before a minor issue becomes a major one. This lecture is adapted directly from our Canine Trauma & Casualty Care Course and serves as an excellent introduction to canine emergency preparedness. This event is completely FREE for all members of the Nordik K9 Skool community.

Hey Erika! There could be a number of reasons why your dog is electing to go all Mortal Kombat on the dog next door and you hit on a few of them. It looks like you have the right concepts in place, we may need to tweak a few things or ensure we're following through. A recall alone isn't going to save you on this one. First, I would challenge you not to allow any interactions between him and this other dog through that fence that would allow him to unleash the beast so to say. We need to tackle the lack of control issues you have before we up that level of challenge. This is where emotional regulation comes into play. It's not about simply forcing interactions that willingly set him up to fail and punishing him for it. We need to start off slow and gradual. Let me ask, has he ever met the dog next door? Have you and the next door neighbour tried going for a walk with the two of them beyond the boundaries of their properties in "neutral territory"? It doesn't sound like your dog is really wishing for all dogs to be his best friend but what we advocate for is neutrality and this would absolutely be the goal here. I'd want to know how he handles a walk (at distance) between him and dog next door. That would be my starting point. Secondly, has he been e-collar conditioned?

It's super challenging when the other side isn't on the same goal as you. I would definitely try reaching out again. As for the e-collar, when layered and used correctly in a way the dog understands, it's a fantastic tool for this issue but it has to come with consistency as always. Remember, it's a tool to help but you have to do the training as well to get the dog to disengage entirely.
Welcome! — Let’s Meet You & Your Dog
To get started, please introduce yourself and your dog. Tell us a bit about who you are, what you’re working toward, and what brought you to the Nordik K9 Training & Education Community Hub. We’d love for you to include: • Your name and where you’re from • Your dog’s name, breed (or best guess), and age • A photo of your dog (working, relaxing, or being chaotic — we love all versions) • Your current training goals or challenges • A funny or unique fact about your dog • How long you’ve been training or working with dogs This helps us build a supportive environment where members can connect, learn, and grow together. We’re excited to get to know you and your dogs.

Hey Lauren! Great to have you and Norm with us! What sort of things are you and Norm doing? I see what looks like rat tubes. It's lovely that you got such a great dog from a shelter. As a colleague often says, a great dog can come from anywhere. My own SAR operational dog came from the Barrie SPCA and she's incredible. I can't wait to see what you and Norm have to share with us. - Elise
