It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of legendary drummer and vocalist Mike Browning, who passed away on July 13, 2026, at the age of 62. For those of us at Sick Drummer Magazine, this one hits close to home. We had the privilege of interviewing and featuring Mike over the years, and he was always generous with his time, his stories, and his passion for extreme metal. He wasn't just one of death metal's pioneers—he was someone who helped define what extreme drumming could become. As a co-founder of Morbid Angel alongside Trey Azagthoth and later the driving force behind Nocturnus and Nocturnus AD, Mike left a permanent mark on the evolution of death metal. His work on The Key remains one of the most influential performances in the genre, blending relentless aggression with an ambitious, forward-thinking approach that continues to inspire generations of drummers and musicians around the world. The extreme drumming community has lost one of its true architects, but Mike Browning's impact will continue to resonate every time someone sits behind a kit and pushes the boundaries of heavy music. From everyone at Sick Drummer Magazine, we extend our deepest condolences to Mike's family, friends, bandmates, and fans across the world. Rest in peace, Mike. Thank you for everything you gave to the metal community. Your legacy—and your drumming—will never be forgotten.
