๐ค "Should I Create an AI Account?" Your Privacy Questions Answered
Hey everyone! ๐ I wanted to share a great question from Donna at our recent AImagination Experience workshop: "My question was regarding risks of creating an account with AI platforms. I've been using ChatGPT regularly but have no login because I don't know who has access to the information I input. A lot of personal data is being uploaded and it feels more private to have no login. What are your thoughts on what's happening behind the scenes for AI?" This is a great question! Privacy concerns are definitely top of mind for many of us. ๐น GUEST VS. ACCOUNT: Using ChatGPT without logging in might feel more private, but the platform still collects usage data either way. Having an account can actually give you MORE control through privacy settings and data management options. ๐น WHAT TO SHARE: A good rule I follow is simple - don't put anything into AI tools you wouldn't want made public. (Although I have to admit, I'm an open book so not a great example ๐) Think of it like having a conversation in a coffee shop rather than your living room. ๐น TERMS OF SERVICE: I know these are a pain to read (and honestly, who understands all the legal jargon anyway?), but it's worth scanning the highlights to try to understand how your data might be used. OpenAI and other companies do state that they use conversations to improve their models. AI is a "learning" model so it needs to "consume" all the input and accepted output to keep learning. ๐น THE PRIVACY-BENEFIT BALANCE: This is the real question - is the value you're getting worth the information you're sharing? For most everyday uses like drafting emails or brainstorming ideas, the tradeoff makes sense. ๐น HUMAN REVIEW IS KEY: I always remind folks that AI output needs human oversight. You're still in control of what you actually input, use and share. The reality is we make these privacy tradeoffs constantly in our digital lives - from social media to email to shopping online. The key is being INTENTIONAL about what you share and understanding the value you're getting in return.
