Having a Voice in Your Own Healthcare
Do you ever feel like doctors, dentists, or other medical professionals end up having more say over your health than you do? I’ve had moments like that — not because I didn’t care or ask questions, but because navigating the system itself can make your voice feel smaller. I’m curious how others here have experienced that.

LEARN HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR YOUR KIDS EDUCATION!!
Question for parents who’ve been through the IEP process: What’s one thing you wish you knew earlier when you first started fighting for an IEP for your child? Could be something emotional, practical, or something no one explained clearly at the beginning.

What I wish I’d known earlier is that the way you describe your child matters just as much as the diagnosis. I spent a long time explaining how hard things were emotionally, not realizing the system needed specific language to act. If you’re in it right now and feel lost — you’re not doing anything wrong.
WORDING MATTERS!!
Many institutional decision-making systems rely on procedures and categories to process information. There’s an important distinction most people aren’t told: There’s a difference between what you’re legally allowed to know and what an institution is legally required to explain. Those aren’t the same thing. As long as an organization meets its legal obligations, it isn’t required to surface every option or category that could affect an outcome. That doesn’t make it malicious — just procedural. This is why wording matters. The way something is written can quietly place you into a category that helps you or one that works against you. Have you ever experienced this? In education, credit, insurance, debt, or healthcare? If so, you’re not alone — and learning this language is what this community is about.

What we're about.
What This Community Focuses On Many institutional decision-making systems rely on procedures, forms, and automated processes. They categorize information based on how something is written, not on intent, emotion, or personal circumstances. These systems don’t explain their language clearly, and they rarely tell you which words or framing place you into a helpful category versus one that works against you. Often, the difference between a yes, a delay, or a no comes down to communication — not the situation itself. This community exists to teach that language, so you can communicate clearly within these systems and advocate for yourself with confidence.

Welcome to Systems Literacy / Self-Advocacy
Welcome to Systems Literacy / Self-Advocacy This community is here to help people better understand institutional systems and communicate within them clearly and effectively. You don’t need to introduce yourself right away or share personal details. Take some time to look around and get comfortable. Over time, you’ll find clear explanations, practical guidance, and space to build confidence advocating for yourself in real-world situations. This is a supportive, focused space. Questions are welcome, and learning happens at your pace. Glad you’re here.
