Let's set some goals together!
As we kick things off in here, let’s do something fun we can come back to later... A year from now… what would feel like a win for you? Grew your first garden? Freezer full of your own produce? First project built? Animals on your property? Just being outside more? I’ll go first. By this time next year, I’ll consider it a win when we officially have our own homegrown beef in the freezer. We’re grass feeding our first steer this spring through fall, so as long as everything goes well, we should get there. Deposit’s paid… now we’re just waiting on better weather so we can go pick him up. Your turn 👇 Also — quick reminder we’ve got our first live call happening this Thursday. If you’re even thinking about starting something this year, you’ll want to be there. Grow first garden - for me this means planning, planting, growing and harvesting at least something in our first year, but more importantly, getting a start on what is possible with our small space, and building into it.
So many new faces in here… welcome 👋
If you’re new here, let me assure you you’re in the right place. Most people end up here because something’s been sitting in the back of their mind… They are wanting to grow more of their own food… but don’t quite know where to start or what to build. Quick roll call 👇 Let me know in the comments, where are you at right now with things? 1. Still thinking about starting a build 2. Planning my first project 3. Currently building something 4. Already have a few things built 5. Focused on growing food / animals now I want to get a feel for where everyone is at so I can make this group is as useful as possible for you all.

1 - right at the beginning and want to plan properly, but in time to get growing this year. New house, new yard, new opportunity.
Green house size
I’m still waiting to hear if our plans to build the Petunia greenhouse is too small. We staked it out in the garden and it looks really small! Looking for feedback!

@Kevin Wink Just hop on and buy the Iris plans - I don't think returning plans is an option, as the originals could have been copied and kept, which isn't in the spirit of supporting businesses - the costs of the mailings backwards and forwards internationally would render returns pretty pointless anyway.

Hey friend! I'm so glad you're here. I'm Carolynne—the one behind every plan, testing every build with my husband Eric in our Alberta backyard, and running Hillside Market from our little homestead in Zone 3 Canada 🇨🇦. I created the Yardstead Society to support you in two ways: 1️⃣ Build Support (Free) Get help with your DIY projects from start to finish. Whether you're building a greenhouse, chicken coop, or backyard retreat, ask questions, share progress, and get guidance from the community. Eric and I are both here to help with build questions. 2️⃣ Yardstead Support (Paid Membership) Weekly calls with me, expert interview sessions, and access to resources for actually living the lifestyle—growing food, raising chickens, preserving your harvest, and working toward real self-sufficiency. 👋 Start by introducing yourself! Tell us where you're from, what you're building, or what you're hoping to grow or raise. Already finished a project? Post it under Progress Pics so we can celebrate with you. 📚 Explore the Classroom: - Build Spotlights – See what others have created - Project Planning Tools – Checklists and resources to help you succeed - Yardstead Resources – Growing, raising, and preserving (paid members) - Plus all Yardstead Society members get monthly discounts on guides and gear Tag me (@Carolynne Hill) or Eric (@Eric Hill) anytime with questions or to share what you're working on. Let's get building! ✨ — Carolynne PS: Say hi below! 👇

Checking in from another Zone 3 Albertan - looking for the best solutions for a newly acquired small yard with a short growing season. Excited to see what is possible this year.
