The Smallest Home Lab That Still Feels Like a Real Datacenter #homelab #homeserver https://www.virtualizationhowto.com/2026/01/the-smallest-home-lab-that-still-feels-like-a-real-datacenter/
Shrinking I hope. As homelab resources mature, I am just starting to relegate older hardware to a separate 'staging' room in my lab. These are machines I can spin up or down whenever I want - but I don't leave them powered on. Just knowing if I want to try something crazy and need a windows machine and two linux machines and a switch for example - i have them all in a "cold-standby" mode. my homelab knows their MAC addresses and I keep notes on their "last-known-state" - but otherwise they don't clutter up everything else. I even ran a pair of "trunk-lines" to them so they can still participate in the main network without me having to touch any cables at that end - and I put them in a room all by themselves with their own power and local backups. So far so good - I have successfully moved 4 machines and two switches OUT of the main lab but still have them there to use again if i need to.
