🌿 FAITH FORWARD — DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS IDEA? LET’S TALK ABOUT IT! 🌿 A young man recently reached out to me because he wants to start a box truck business in Texas. Here’s what caught my attention: he is already an Uber driver. So my conversation with him wasn’t simply, “Go buy a box truck.” My question was: How can we use what you’re already doing today to help position you for the business you want tomorrow? Here’s the strategy we discussed: STEP 1 — Establish the business. Set up the Texas business properly, obtain the EIN, establish business banking, and begin treating this like a real transportation company from the beginning. STEP 2 — Keep driving Uber and keep your income coming in. There is no reason to immediately walk away from the income he already has. Continue driving while preparing and building the box-truck side of the business. STEP 3 — Establish the proper trucking authority. If he plans to operate as a for-hire interstate motor carrier, determine the USDOT and MC operating authority required for his planned box-truck operation. STEP 4 — Put the required commercial insurance in place. This is important. To maintain active interstate operating authority, the required insurance filings must remain on file with FMCSA. The insurance requirements depend on the type and size of the operation. He doesn’t need an MC number simply to drive regular Uber passenger trips. The strategy is that he can continue earning through Uber while maintaining the properly established carrier side of his business. STEP 5 — Protect that new authority. A new MC authority can be more difficult to work with because some brokers and shippers establish their own minimum authority-age, insurance, safety, or operating-history requirements. So don’t treat that MC number casually. Keep the required insurance active. Keep the company compliant. Keep business records organized. Don’t allow required filings to lapse. Protect the company’s safety record. STEP 6 — Use the beginning period strategically.
