My next project is embroidering a pair of shoes for my daughter. I don't know how to start and end without knots. My idea was to just leave really long tails and weave them in. Are there better ways?

Anyone else on her like me and try to compete against yourself when you crochet or knit? I will time how long it takes me to finish a row, then I try to beat that time. :) I have been in one speed crochet competition at a county fair. I smoked everyone. (I think because I had been practicing without knowing it!) What about you?
