It’s measured in feet from truck to door. • Elevator / building rules — Many NYC / Tri-state buildings need a Certificate of Insurance (COI), reserved elevator time, and padding. Book that early or you may lose the slot. • Shuttle / smaller truck — When a big tractor can’t fit the street or garage, crews transfer to a smaller truck. Myths to skip: • “If the quote didn’t mention stairs, stairs are free.” No — undisclosed access can be billed day-of or force a reprice. • “Elevator means no stair fee.” Only if the elevator is reserved, big enough, and actually usable for your load. What to tell your mover up front: 1. Floors / flights at both addresses 2. 2. Elevator (freight vs passenger) and whether it needs booking 3. 3. Distance from legal parking to the door 4. 4. One phrase that creates a lot of confusion on a move is “binding estimate” versus “non-binding estimate.” Here’s the simple version: A non-binding estimate is a projection based on the inventory and details you give up front. The final price can change if the actual shipment is larger, extra services are needed, or the access is different than described. That does not automatically mean something is wrong — it means the original scope changed or was incomplete. A binding estimate is a set price for the services and inventory listed in the written estimate. It is not a blank check for anything that comes up later. If you add packing, stairs, long carries, storage, shuttle service, or items that were not listed, those can still affect the total. Before signing, ask: ✅ Exactly what services are included? ✅ What happens if the inventory changes? ✅ Are stairs, elevators, parking, COI requirements, and long carries documented? ✅ What valuation/claims coverage applies? ✅ Are pickup and delivery windows written down? Myth: “Binding” means every possible move-day surprise is covered. Reality: the price is only as clear as the scope behind it.
