Duende
In 1933, the poet Federico García Lorca gave a lecture in Buenos Aires about something he called duende. He'd watched flamenco singers who had perfect technique and left the room cold, and old singers with ruined voices who made people tear their shirts. Duende was his word for that difference. Lorca said duende can show up in any art, but it lives most fully in the ones that need a living body and exist only in the moment: music, dance, spoken poetry. Forms that are born and die every time they're performed. By his own standard, budo belongs on that list. Maybe at the top of it. A technique can't be stored on a shelf. And in a real exchange, your partner writes half the piece in real time. He also said duende won't come unless death is possible. That's why he singled out the bullfight. Strip the danger out of martial arts and you're left with dance. Respect the range, respect the man, respect the danger. Lorca described three forces in an artist, and I see all three on the mat: The Muse is correctness. Clean kata, good explanations, textbook angles. The Angel is grace. The beautiful, effortless mover everyone films. The Duende comes up from the soles of the feet. It shows up when the form breaks under pressure and something true comes through. Often rougher. The Cthonian expression. Most systems produce muses. Some produce angels. This is why we train principle first. Forms are tools, and tools are meant to be picked up and put down. When the form dies and the principle stays alive, that's when something real can arrive. Add real pressure or unpredictability to one drill. Have your partner vary the attack, the timing, or the intent. Notice the moment you stop performing and start responding. Have you ever trained with someone who had duende? Not the most technical person in the room, but the one whose movement unsettled you. What did it feel like?

Not sport.
While Self-Defense and warfare are not the same thing, there is a lot of good stuff in this video regarding how humans respond to life and death situations. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19M7gnrsej/
