Today's addiction counsellors are increasingly working with clients who present with escalating anger, threats, fixation, paranoia, intimate partner violence concerns, workplace conflicts, concerning communications, or other behaviours that leave clinicians asking, "How serious is this?" The role of the addiction counsellor is evolving. Clients seeking support for substance use concerns are often experiencing complex challenges that extend beyond addiction alone, including trauma, mental health concerns, relationship difficulties, significant life stressors, and behaviours that may create uncertainty around risk and safety. Addiction professionals are often among the first people clients trust with disclosures involving threats, escalating anger, intimate partner violence concerns, workplace conflicts, fixation, concerning communications, suicidal or homicidal ideation, and other behaviours that may require additional assessment and support. Yet, many addiction counsellors have received limited or no formal training in behavioural threat assessment.
