Ever had an IVECO Daily come in with flashing mileage on the dash and weren’t sure where to start? This is one of the most common causes I’ve found. First checks: - Loose connections behind dash or under bonnet - Fuses, relays & connectors - Battery voltage and voltage drop Bear in mind these use a smart charge system, so charging voltage may not increase at idle until the vehicle is driven. I always recommend checking charge rate during a road test. While inspecting wiring, I found corrosion inside the TCM (Trailer Control Module) connector. Plugged into JALTEST diagnostics for further investigation, which confirmed the TCM fault. Replaced and reprogrammed the TCM — fault rectified and another happy customer 😀 Worth noting: Not all diagnostic tools can perform the programming procedure, so dealer-level programming may sometimes be required. Driver reported sudden loss of power straight after hitting a pothole. Van came in stuck in limp mode with warning lights on. Started by checking for any visual damage under and around the vehicle, With the vehicle being in limp mode I plugged in diagnostics to see what it came back with. Diagnostics pointed towards The intercooler temp sensor & turbo BUT instead of throwing parts at it, I did a bit more digging… After further investigation in to the system, I found a 6mm vacuum pipe had rubbed through! Replaced the vacuum pipe, reset the codes and test drove! It’s easy to jump straight to replacing parts, but sometimes a hard knock or vibration is all it takes to trigger an existing weak point. If you’re new to the trade, you’ve probably seen experienced mechanics lightly tapping nuts, bolts, or components with a small hammer and thought… what are they doing that for? It’s not just habit — there’s a proper reason behind it. In heavy vehicle work, especially on HGVs, things like corrosion, thread tension, and seated components can all affect how parts behave when you’re stripping or refitting them. A light tap can help: - Break corrosion bonds without damaging threads - “Shock” seized fasteners loose before applying force - Most importantly tells you the sound difference between a loose bolt and a tight bolt. It’s one of those small workshop techniques that doesn’t get taught properly in textbooks, but you’ll see time and time again in real-world repairs.
