@Derek Doucet Thanks, Derek, excellent suggestion. I may incorporate that into the website. I'm trying to keep it as simple and with as little friction as possible. I land almost 100% of the calls I get, so we go from their first question, "Do you do headlights?" to "What time works best to come by?" So it's a simple process. Most calls seem to be coming from my Google Business Profile. If you don't have one, I strongly encourage you to start one. The website and GBP compliment one another, and that's led to calls and business

@Andrew Tucker Thanks, Andrew, I appreciate the feedback and suggestion. I agree with you 100%. My current pricing has three tiers: Basic, Premium, and Ultimate. Inevitably, almost everyone chooses the middle price point, $129. They must perceive that the lowest price is too basic, and the Ultimate (with a ceramic finish) is too expensive, which drives them back to the middle pricing. I've taken that to mean that most people are price-sensitive to some extent. I'm planning on raising my prices and would like to get a few more positive reviews on my GBP before I do so.
Lowest recommended sandpaper grit?
Question for the Group: What is the lowest grit sandpaper you've used for headlight restoration... and not regretted it? I'm stuck at 400 and only use that occasionally. Just wondering if it's advisable and safe to go lower. If you used lower, please specify if that was using a power tool or sanding by hand. Thanks in advance for your response.

@Rafe Trujillo Great, appreciate the feedback, Rafe. Good to know you can go that low and still be OK if you just work your way up...makes total sense. Thank you

Thanks Tim, I appreciate your feedback.. I used 400 again today and it really helped. I'll be going lower in the future and looking forward to seeing how well it works.
Found time to do one headlight on my personal vehicle
Before the sun went down quick! 07' Corolla using DIY items including TuffStuff, SprayAway, 320,600,1000,2000,3000 then Cerakote Headlight Step3. I might have sanded with the 320 too hard. Looks good from afar, but you can see slight horizontal scratches when looking closely. When do you decide to start with 320, 600, or 1000? Getting practice in before I offer to friends and family for more practice. I hope to get the hang of it soon! Collecting all the content I can to post on socials.

Nice start, Sean. Do you use a compounding solution? It's basically liquid sandpaper. I use it after 3000 and before the polishing solution. I use Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and usually see a big change after doing this step, as it seems to take out some of the tiny scratches. And because you're using a pad with more flexibility than sandpaper on a backing plate, it contours with the curvature of the lights so you get an even finish. I generally use it at a higher speed than the sandpaper. If you are not currently using a compounding step, it may be worth a try. I'm getting such good results and it's so easy to use, I'm considering replacing some of the more intermediate grit steps (1200, 1500, 2000) with a more aggressive compounding solution, essentially replacing three steps with one step.

@Sean Lee Thanks, Sean. I did a Porsche 911 today, and after 3000, the lenses still seemed a little cloudy. After compounding, they looked great! To me, it's one of the stages, between 3000band polishing, where I see the biggest improvement, so I would definitely recommend trying it out to see if it makes a difference in your work. The lights weren't that bad, but here is an after picture.
My most recent job 🤩
I was unsure how these would turn out, but I trusted the process and they turned out great! I used the headlight magic setup.

@John Shipps I'm using the Max Shine EB212...Absolutely love it. Its a cheaper version of the Mirka 3'inch. I would get the kit if you can but it looks like the kits are out of stock at the moment on Parks. I also recommend getting an extra 5.0 mhz battery.. you'll get twice the work time as the 2.4 and its only a few dollars more. IMO it doesn't affect the weight or performance so if you can spend an exta $79 vs $59, get the bigger battery as a backup. @John Shipps Hi John, I basically use it on all grits. I have a smaller 2' Shinemate DA I use for tight spots and use that one for the 400, primarily because its lowest speed is much slower than the 3', so it almost feels like aggressive hand sanding. Based on some of the feedback from the group, I do plan on going lower and will likely only use hand sanding for those, at least until I feel more comfortable.

Did this one the other day and, the headlights were in rough shape. The owner told me new headlights from the Dealer were $6K. Several others had told him they couldn't be salvaged as the damage was internal. Rather than buy new ones, he was going to have them removed, sent off to have them disassembled and reassembled with new plastic lenses. That process was going to take 2 weeks and cost over $1000, not including removing and installing the headlights. As a last resort, he called me. I started with 400 and worked my way up, double sanding for each grit, one with the power tool and one hand sanding. It took almost 2 hours to finish, but afterward he was so happy he commented about the job on the Porsche Macan Forum and added my contact info and website. Since then, I have 2 more 911s scheduled for next week. Good news spreads fast!!! Here is a before and after... His wife was over the moon with the results.

@Keat Simon Thanks, Keat, I appreciate the comment and tip. I usually quote them the price upfront because that's one of the first questions they ask me. So it's a little more difficult to change the price once I'm on-site. But in general, I'm thinking about raising my prices across the board soon. At the moment, I'm focused on increasing the volume and getting more Google Reviews, which will in turn help with the volume. There are other headlight guys in the area that have over 100 reviews, so I'm playing catch-up for now. I'm ranking well in Google Organic and Maps, so I will feel more comfortable raising the prices once I have some more reviews. I don't do any dealerships, just individual owners, so increasing the volume is slower. The only other advertising I do is with business cards in parking lots. But honestly, the conversion for that is basically zero. Do you do any advertising that drives more business your way?
