I help people change for a living, but couldn't change myself
Hey heroes! A quick one for all of you today, sharing a bit of my background and what brought me here. For the longest time, my life was a ridiculously hypocritical. What some of you may not know is I'm an executive coach, and have been one for nearly ten years. Companies literally hire me to help their C-suite leadership create meaningful, measurable, and lasting change. And, at the risk of sounding full of myself, I think I'm pretty good at what I do. And yet: And every night after work, I was on the couch until 3 or 4am, playing whatever was new, doing just enough at my job to pretend. I tried everything you've tried. White-knuckling. The uninstall/reinstall cycle, more times than I can count. Deleting the game feels amazing for about four days. You know how it ends. What finally worked wasn't willpower. I got sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I did the thing I should have done years earlier: I took the exact principles I use on executives (environment design, accountability, identity work) and ran them on my own gaming. It worked. Eventually. Not overnight, and not without slip-ups. And I think I made it a lot harder on myself than I needed to because I did it alone. And ultimately that's why I wanted to create Respec: I looked for a program or community like this when I was going through it, and I was disappointed with what I found. I wanted to make sure that the next time someone like me is desperately searching for an answer at 3:00 AM on a Tuesday, they find something that works. The program's not perfect. It's very much still a work in progress (and I'm grateful for the ways all of you will help shape it). But I think it's powerful, and I know it works. Alright, enough about me. Your turn: what's something you tried, only to see it fail? And what did you learn from it (or could you learn from it, in retrospect?).

@Blue Mojo Hah, thanks man! "Respawn" not working out as a name really does feel like it's for the best. This program's much more about a respec, anyway! That's really awesome, Myles! I'm glad you found something that lights you up. I agree 100%: Pouring that much time and energy into something that's "trendy" but doesn't fill your cup is a recipe for burnout. Find what lights you up, challenges you in the best ways, and forces you to grow. That's where real happiness and fulfillment lie!
EX GAMERS
What games were yall stuck into at your peak of gaming? and what made yall want to change for the better and give up the gamer life? 🧐🧐

World of Warcraft was my gateway drug. I'd played games before then, but it wasn't until WoW that gaming became all-consuming for me. A big part of that at the time was that my brother and sister played too, and it was a great bonding experience. I spent, like, two decades chasing the high from the early days of WoW and never recaptured it. Turning point for me was kids. @Jon Sheridan made a great video the other day on when "rest" stops being unhealthy, and he asked himself a really powerful question: "Is this behavior I want my kids modeling?" Kids definitely put things in perspective. When they think of me, do I want them to think about a guy stuck behind a computer screen playing a game? When they talk about me, do I want it to be about the time we spent together, or lamenting the time I spent away? That's a simplified version of it, of course -- there was a lot at play for me that ultimately forced me to make a change. But kiddos were definitely one of the big ones.

@Jon Sheridan As always, Jon, really appreciate your honest and vulnerable answers. That's a line we're trying to walk too, with our oldest. He has a Nintendo Switch and is a huge Minecraft fan. He loves it, obviously, and as is pretty normal with any kid, it quickly became his whole personality for awhile. 😉 We ended up limiting Switch time to 30 minutes a day, and only after he'd "earned it" by taking care of his responsibilities (drinking his water, practicing taekwondo, etc). We still sometimes debate if we should've introduced gaming in the first place but, like you: I like gaming, and I want my son to like it too. I just don't want it to be his entire life and identity.
Behind-the-Scenes Update: Always Do Your Homework
Hey Heroes! Part of my commitment as I build this community and program is transparency: I'm building Respawn in public, partially to hold myself accountable (gotta practice what you preach!) and partially so all of you can help shape what the program ultimately becomes. After all: I know what worked for me, but I want to tailor the experience to all of you. Which brings me to my first behind-the-scenes builder update: You know what happens when you build fast? Perhaps a little too fast? You don't do quite as much research as you ought to ... Which can mean you end up naming your flagship program (Respawn) after someone else's flagship program ( ... also Respawn). Oops. Ah, well, you live and you learn. And so, moving forward: Respawn will be known as Respec, complete with a brand new logo (see attached!). It's probably for the best: After all, Respawn typically means dying and starting over, right? Respec, on the other hand, is all about rebuilding yourself into something stronger and better. And isn't that why we're all here? As always, Heroes: Onward and upward!

Quick intro
Hey heroes! I figure if I'm gonna ask each of you to introduce yourselves, the least I can do is go first. So, here we go: Hi! I'm Connor. I'm based out of Kalispell, Montana in the US. I just took the Class Quiz and got handed Bard, which anyone who knows me probably saw coming from a mile off. Turns out building a whole party and refusing to shut up about it was a bit of a tell. Outside of gaming, I'm a huge nerd (shocker). I love reading and listening to audiobooks, acting as DM to my family's Dungeons and Dragons campaign, and writing (recently finished the first draft of a young adult LitRPG!). Okay, that's me! You're up. Looking forward to meeting each and every one of you!

@Blue Mojo Hey, look at that! The world needs more paladins. The little bit I've seen of how you interact with your community makes me think this is a perfect fit. You clearly care about others! I love this.

@Jon Sheridan Someone's gotta write the tavern songs! 😉
Warrior joining the fray
Wish I could say I’m surprised by the warrior pick but….💪🏼 I’m Jon from Murfreesboro TN. I’m a dad of three mini warriors in the making. I’m a chiropractor by trade but a Highland Games athlete by hobby. That’s been most of my life, picking things up, throwing them around, seeing if I can do it better than anyone else. Happy to be a part of this group, always played the role of the tank. I think fatherhoods allowed me to pick up the shield IRL. Hoping to give more time back to the kiddos.

Hey Jon, welcome to Respawn! That's awesome -- you and @Cole Drake-Eubanks both! Every party needs a good front-liner or two. What a great intro! I'll admit: I hadn't heard of the Highland Games before you mentioned them, so I had to look them up. That looks incredible! I recently completed my first Spartan race and, while that's nowhere near the intensity of the Highland Games, I can understand the draw. How cool, man! Your kiddos are lucky to have you as a role model, and we're lucky to have you in the community!
