I spend every day in the woods of MT. This is field-first geology and history for people who want the land to make sense, not just a hobby.

Welcome to in the dirt!
Welcome, explorer! You’ve just stepped into a community where the ground beneath your feet isn’t just rock—it’s a story waiting to be read. What to Expect: Field-first insights: Learn how to see the land through the eyes of a geologist and a historian. Hands-on learning: No theory without practice. We’ll guide you through real-world observations and insights. Community-driven: Share your discoveries, get feedback, and connect with fellow rockhounds and history buffs. Your First Challenge: Head outside and pick a spot in SW Montana. Notice three things: changes in color, broken ground, and unusual landscape shapes. Share a photo and your observations in the group! Remember: If you want to understand the land, you’re in the right place. If you’re just here for pretty rocks, this might not be for you. Welcome aboard, and let’s get started!

Day 1 — Orientation: “You’ve Been Looking at the Ground Wrong”
Most people look at rocks. Skilled people look through them. This isn’t about memorizing minerals. It’s about understanding process—heat, pressure, fluids, time. Next time you’re outside, don’t pick anything up. Just notice color changes, broken ground, and slopes. This class will be touching on history. Butte, MT history to be more specific.
