There’s nothing that frustrates me more than searching for a Canva design that I know is there….. As someone who has thousands upon thousands of designs saved in Canva, this could be an EXTREMELY lengthy process. So let’s talk about the solution. Just like organising your files in your computer, it’s a great idea to have a naming convention with your Canva designs. When you open up a new design in Canva, it is automatically assigned a design name which includes the type of design and the size used, for example, “Untitled Design - Instagram Post (4:5)” or “Untitled Design - 500px x 500px”. As soon as you enter text into your design, the design name is taken from the first words that appear (in the example below, the design name became “Your paragraph text”. This could be fine if your design is a one-off. But what if your design is a carousel post that will appear regularly on your Instagram (think of all those posts you see that are part of a series like “Things I bet you didn’t know about Canva”). You can see that finding a particular design could take a while. However, you can search Canva for designs using key words. So it’s important that one of the first things you should do is click on that title in the top bar and change it to include as many key words that will refine your search results. I have a couple of different brands, so if I was creating an Instagram post for Blue Wren Design Studio I would probably start with “BWDS”, then describe my the type of design it would be. In this way, an Instagram post for quotes would be: “BWDS - IG - Quotes”. And, since things like brand colour palettes and styles change over the life of the business, I may even add the year and month as well. I know it might seem a little excessive, but it’s a habit that’s really worth developing. Those 30 seconds could save you 30 minutes of time spent searching somewhere down the road (and yes, I speak from experience!). So tell me, is naming your designs something you’ve always done? Or are you someone with a great system already in place?
