Wk 18 / 2026 - End of Sewing Week Check In 🪡
Well… here we are at the end of the week. Needles threaded, unthreaded, re-threaded… plans followed, plans abandoned, and (hopefully) a few beautiful things brought to life along the way. On Monday, @Valerie The French Sewing Bee , @Jan Appleton , @Debra Verrall , @Jane Harbison , @Nancy Poekert , @Christy Steiger you all told me what was on your table (or not sewing on your table), now let's hear how it actually went. Not the perfect version. The real version. ⟶ What did you manage to start? ⟶ What actually moved forward (even a little)? ⟶ What’s still sitting there… waiting for you? ⟶ What surprised you this week? (a win, a problem, a “why did I do it like that?” moment 😄) This isn’t about ticking everything off. It’s about staying connected to your work, and to each other. I’ll be going through and celebrating with you properly, so don’t be shy with the details. Photos, progress, chaos… all of it is welcome here, we're here to learn & evolve. 🖤 Claire Amelia Now tell me, how did your week at the table really go? ⬇️

I altered my daughter's evening bias-cut gown, and it was not a smooth process. She wanted the lining removed as it was white, and showed through the gown. This is a long dress with the lining cut off above the knee. She also wanted the sides taken in, and the cheap bias fabric kept rippling. I finally took it in less than she wanted, cut off the lining as high as I could -- drapey cowl neckline front and back necklines meant it couldn't be completely removed. So, not happy with the end result. I mailed it to her, and told her to mail it back if she needs the entire lining replaced in a darker beige color. I didn't get anything else done. Dang it! Some days I'm sorry I know how to make stuff.
Hello Monday, A New Sewing Week Commences 🪡
Good morning, makers! 🪡 The atelier is open, the kettle's on (the Yorkshire tea isn't soaking in today), the week is full of possibilities, and I am SO ready to see what this community gets up to over the next seven days. Before you thread your machine, pick up your needle or unroll a single centimetre of fabric, I want to know what's on your table this week. We're doing something a little different from today. This week, we're holding each other accountable. So tell me where you are at: ⟶ What sewing project are you STARTING this week? ⟶ What are you in the middle of and WORKING ON? ⟶ What do you want to COMPLETE before Friday? Drop your answer below, as specific as you like. Not just "a dress" but "the silk organza sleeves that have been staring at me for two weeks" 😄. The more honest and real, the better. We're a community of serious makers, we can handle the truth of the to-do list! I'll be back on Friday to check in and celebrate how far we all got, progress, detours and happy accidents included. —————————————————————————————————— Also… 👀 I have something exciting coming in May. A theme that I think is going to absolutely light this community up, and I genuinely cannot wait to share it with you. Stay close, stay engaged, and keep your eyes on the notice board. The first hint is coming very soon. Happy sewing, Claire Amelia 🪡 Now, tell me what's on your table! ⬇️

@Claire Amelia Guipere lace is so lovely, and easy to piece. Of course, nothing is easy when there isn't quite enough fabric. I've hand embroidered and beaded in between lace bits when that has happened. No one knows the difference. I've also borrowed lace pieces from the inner seams. I'm sure you know all the tricks by now, too!

@Claire Amelia So true! I learn something from everything I make.
Discipline Deep Dives - Share Yours 🪡
Let’s get into the work a little deeper today. Across all disciplines, there are techniques we return to again and again, the ones that quietly define our standard. What’s one technique you feel has truly changed your work over time? Not something basic, but something you’ve refined, reconsidered, or now approach differently with experience. I’d love to hear what’s shaped your hands. 🫶 & A BIG WELCOME to our latest group members @Janine Martin @Suzanne Bowyer I'm building in real time, & grateful you are here 🔥

@Claire Amelia What bothered me was the cheap fabrics -- thin lining, glitter that falls off everywhere, no proper under-support for the skirts, etc.

@Claire Amelia Add those cheaply made gowns to brides who have either lost 40 lbs or not lost the weight they planned when they bought a smaller size gown. Bridal work is both rewarding and exhausting. After the pandemic, I was finding staples and pins still in gowns, too.

I've been sewing since I was 5. Last year, I closed my alterations business, and I'm looking forward to sewing just for myself and my family.
