As a newbie to this writing lark, I'm not that clear what 'Literary' fiction is. Is there a clear definition? I've been told my first book is 'Contemporary', though with a family trauma element.

ah - well, mine are definitiely character driven I guess - but I'd say I'm quite a jump away from 'artistic prose' 😁
Lets talk about the Ethics of Ai
This is a repost from @Kimberly Davis and we both think this is worthy of a thread of its own. Here was her original question .. ---- I want to pose a question, going back to Asimov's three laws of robotics...restating the three laws below so you don't have to scroll back... 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. How do we define "robot"? Is a self-driving car a robot? I, for example, have begun thinking of my (NOT self-driving) car as my "mech." It is so sophisticated now with cameras and navigation systems that I can control with voice commands. I read in the Houston Chronicle last week about a Cybertruck accident where the driver--allegedly--accidentally set the vehicle to auto and then could not get control of it to prevent an accident. (It was a court ruling, and I know I have details muddled... please don't quote me!) I also want to point out how very ingrained these three laws are in our thinking about the future. They clearly shaped Data's behavior in Star Trek Next Generation. I'm trying to think of explicit examples, but they are everywhere. But at what point do we start calling our helpful devices "robots?" The cars are thinking for themselves, or trying to...

IT has been interesting to read a couple of government responses. Australia and New Zealand are adopting a strong stance to protect creators revenues and try and prevent the Claude/Chat universe from hoovering up all the humans' work - to sell back to us. The UK government also seems to be working towards stronger regulation along with the EU. I fear that the USA will bend to the wills of the four Squillionaires who have bought an now own and control the federal government and press to have no regulation at all. In that way, those four won't give a flying ±uck about the First Law - and only follow the Second - as long as it's in their own interests. Wait and see I guess - we're off to hell in a handcart!!!
Authors in UK?
Hi all-- I am assuming I am not the only author here living and writing in the UK and I'd love to connect with others. I live in York (which makes a lot of sense given I write historical fiction as well as crime fiction) but my move is recent as I am a Yank by birth and here in England on a Global Talent Visa in Literature. Would love to to make connections! So where are you located and what do you write.

You've got some amazing local stuff in York to delve into. the Jorvik stuff of course, but how about Emperor Constantine who was proclaimed in York as well?

@Sophie Perinot It was massive - Penguin and Harper Collins stands almost had their own postcode! I got to speak to Ingram and KDP, heard a useful session on direct to reader promotions, and one on routes to market, from a panel with an agent, Kobo, Bookoture and hulu. So really useful - James from Watson Little gave a useful insight into the agent process - that they actively read through around 250 queries/pitches a week to find the 'gold nuggets' - which should concentrate our minds when writing the pitch!! Not sure I'd pay £80+ to go again next year (plus train fare!)
What Genre Do You Write In?
We just had our first coffee Hour Meetup and some fantastic ideas have been spun out of them. The idea I want to work on is this? I would like to start having regional Virtual Coffee Hour Meetups so that the Authors in certain regions of the country can come together and become friends. Every time a new author joins us we can direct them to the regional meetups so they can start building relationships with authors near them. Also regional meetup events can be done by Big Book Love Regional Leaders. The second idea is to start having Virtual Coffee Hour Meetups for Genres that authors write in so that you guys can mastermind together with authors writing what you are writing. Before we can start this, there is some information that we need to get from you guys. 1. What genre is your main genre you write in? 2. Would you be interested in these localized virtual meetups and genre specific meetups? 3. What days and times are best for you to get online for these meetups? 4. Would you be interested in becoming a Virtual Coffee Hour Regional Leader? Regional Leaders would be made into moderators for the community and you would have the ability to host these meetups right here in our live call zoom room. I would train each Regional Leader so that you understand how the software works. Just throwing this idea out there to gauge interest. Comment below your answers so we can begin to figure how to make this work for the most amount of people.+ Paul Roberson Community Executive Director https://www.bigbooklove.com/paul-l-roberson/

I'm mostly contemporary urban - first novel is based in Manhattan (and Dublin later on), despite being a brit
New writer - new here
It's taken me a few decades to discover that I love writing fiction, after a career writing blog posts and email campaigns! Take a look at my first ever novel - which for avid readers is on Kindleunlimited as well as in paper and hardback versions. I'd love to get other writers' feedback and thoughts on how to get it more widely read. Leave it here or add a DM. Chris

@Fred Oliver Yes indeed - it is. And yes I'm a brit who spent quite a bit of time in Manhattan for digital industry trade shows :) I hope it feels like I know it a bit.
