🎹 Gospel Keys Shed is Growing
Hey everyone! Over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about where I want this community to go. Many of you remember when this was Gospel Progressions University. As this community has grown, I’ve realized the vision has grown too. The new name, Gospel Keys Shed, reflects what I’ve always wanted this to become. Not just a place to watch videos but a place where church musicians learn, practice, ask questions, encourage each other, and grow together. So over the next few weeks you’ll start seeing some exciting changes. 🎹 A refreshed Gospel Keys Shed brand 🎹 The new Song Vault, with regularly added tutorials 🎹 More free Lab live sessions 🎹 More Behind the Keys posts, where I’ll share stories from my own journey, lessons I’ve learned, and the real-life experiences that shaped me as a church musician 🎹 Simpler learning paths designed to get you playing faster while still building a solid musical foundation One of the biggest changes you’ll notice is that I’m putting more emphasis on getting you playing sooner. You’ll still learn the “why” behind the music, but I want you experiencing success early and building confidence as you go. My mission hasn’t changed. I still want to help church musicians become confident, creative, and well-equipped players. I’m just building a better way to get there. If you’ve been here since the Gospel Progressions University days, thank you. . You’ve helped shape this community more than you probably realize, and I’m excited about where we’re headed next. One thing I believe now more than ever is this: I’m not trying to build the biggest gospel keyboard course. I’m trying to build the best place for church musicians to learn, practice, and grow together. I’d love to hear from you. What’s one area of your playing you’d love to improve over the next few months? Let’s build something special. — Chris

You ever feel stuck?
Real talk. I know a lot of people see me as the teacher, the keyboard guy, or the one who already knows what to play. But I remember what it felt like to be unsure, trying to catch changes, trying not to sound lost, trying to keep up when the drummer or preacher shifted the whole room. That’s one reason I built this group. Not just to drop lessons, but to help people feel less stuck. So let me ask: What’s one moment in church service where you still feel unsure about what to play?

@Kathy Scott yea that’s a tough one. The best for that is to learn phrases. Like “happy phrases” “sad phrases” then transition out. Do you ever find yourself playing the same things over and over again?

@Reginald Wilkerson I think a lot of us go through that. The trick isn’t learning hundreds of new licks. it’s building a larger vocabulary of short phrases you can mix and match. When all we know is a few familiar movements, our hands naturally go back to 4-6-5 or straight into a song. Try practicing 2-4 beat phrases by themselves in different keys and focus on how to connect them instead of memorizing longer runs. Over time you’ll notice you have a lot more to say without sounding repetitive. Out of curiosity, do you find this happens more during offering, altar call, or when the preacher is talking?

Teaching gospel musicians the foundations I wish I had when I started. Clear. Practical. Confident.
