When do I start with AI in my business?
I get this question at least twice a week. My answer? You're already late. I started playing with ChatGPT in November 2022. Like everyone else, I was amazed. Curious. A bit unsettled. But I wasn't thinking about business applications yet, I was thinking, how can this help me in my Military Resettlement. That shift happened in March 2023. That's when I stopped being impressed and started asking the hard question: "How does this change everything for UK SMEs?" Fast forward to November 2025. AI has been a widely available, business-transforming technology for 3 years now. Three years..... And most businesses are still in the "waiting to see what happens" phase. Here's what I've learned helping SMEs to identify use cases and get on with AI implementation: The technology isn't your biggest challenge. The tools aren't your biggest barrier. The cost isn't your biggest risk. Your people are your most valuable asset. And if you're not actively preparing them to work alongside AI, you're not just falling behind you're leaving your most important competitive advantage completely untapped. Because here's the reality: → AI doesn't replace good people → It makes them exponentially more effective → But only if they're ready for it and guided on a new and highly effective way of working. The companies thriving with AI in 2025 didn't wait for their teams to "figure it out." They invested in preparing their people first. They made AI literacy a priority, not an afterthought. They understood that technology without capable people is just expensive software. So when should you start? Three years ago would have been ideal. Today is the second-best option. Tomorrow means you're even further behind. Stop contemplating whether or not you need AI. unless you are: A dentist A hairdresser A masseuse or any other skilled hands on trade that a machine cant do, then you need to start seriously looking at how it can help you with all the s**t tasks your team do daily that do nothing for business growth but you see as essential for day to day running.
