Unpopular opinion: the Ikigai framework is not helping you
The Ikigai framework is not helping multipassionates find clarity. It is making them more stuck. You have probably seen the diagram. Four circles. What you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for. Find the center where all four overlap and congratulations, you have found your purpose. Sounds clean, right? Here is what nobody tells you. That diagram is not even real Ikigai. It is a Western invention that got projected onto a Japanese concept and went viral. The actual Japanese understanding of Ikigai has nothing to do with a Venn diagram. It is a feeling. A state of being. Japanese researchers describe it as something deeply personal and internal, ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ you fill out in a weekend. ______________ But the bigger problem for multipassionates is the assumption baked into the diagram itself. It assumes you are looking for one thing. One intersection. One answer. So when you sit down to fill it out and you have seventeen things in every single circle, the framework has no idea what to do with you. You feel like you failed the exercise. You think the problem is you. The problem is the framework was never built for a brain like yours. Ikigai was designed for people who need help finding their one thing. They have too much of it in every direction. What they need is not a tool to narrow down. They need a container that can hold all of it and still make sense from the outside. Have you ever tried the Ikigai exercise? What happened? I am genuinely curious ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

I read the book โ€œIkigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Lifeโ€ last year, quite a while AFTER watching some popular YouTube videos and attempting the Venn diagram methodโ€ฆ imagine my surprise when the book revealed that Ikigai has basically nothing to do with any of the ideas put forward in the YT videos! ๐Ÿ˜‚ The Venn diagram exercise left me feeling so anxious because I just couldnโ€™t come up with any kind of answer. It was frustrating and so disappointing because I watched all these videos that totally seemed to make sense, and promised to help you clarify your life and career goals, but it absolutely didnโ€™t work for me at all. The true meaning of Ikigai lies in finding purpose, meaning and enjoyment in daily life and everyday tasks, staying physically active, social connection and practising mindfulness. I recall a lot of repetition about diet such as eating until you are 80% full, taking joy in simple daily activities such as gardening and growing your own fruit and vegetables to eat; basically slowing down to enjoy the simple things in life. What I found odd about the entire concept of the book itself was that it focused on identifying communities of people who are the longest lived and trying to examine what these people were doing that was contributing to their longevity. Personally, I found the very concept of the book flawed from the outset because I donโ€™t believe that there is a direct correlation between living a meaningful, mindful, joyful life and living the longest. Ikigai doesnโ€™t focus on just one area of life but is about living considerately and mindfully in all areas - physical, social, emotional, and that all makes sense to me. And I suppose that is an aspect that could apply to multi-passionate people because it encourages balance and harmony in our life as a whole, rather than just focusing on a tiny sliver of our existence.

Welcome to The Admori Society ๐Ÿฅณ This is THE community for the multi-passionates and the ADHDers who are done shrinking themselves and trying to niche down. Hello! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป I joined the Admori Society Because: I literally only heard the term โ€œmulti-passionate creativesโ€ for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and wow, did I feel seen for the first time in my life! Now, Iโ€™m trying to figure out how to make my โ€œmultitudeโ€ work for meโ€ฆ My Business is about: I am a former YouTuber and blogger, a keen photographer and an aspiring artist. I hope to be able to bring all these skills (and more) together to create a new business over the next few months. My most recent learning about myself is: Well, thanks to the quiz posted today, I have discovered that I may be ADHD, which is something my husband has insisted is the case for the past twenty yearsโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ
I took the ADHD test and these are my resultsโ€ฆ
โ€œI think in a thousand directions at once and I build something with every single one. Proudly ADHD.โ€ Wow! This is surprising to me. My husband has insisted for years that he thinks I am ADHD and Iโ€™ve always scoffed at the idea. Guess he may have been right all along lol
