Request for an In-Depth Video on Maqams and Their Structure for Saz Players
Dear Chris, I hope you're doing well! I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your videos and the insights you provide on various aspects of Middle Eastern music. I was wondering if you might consider making an in-depth video about maqams, their building blocks (known as ajnas or intervals), and how they work within the context of the saz. As someone who is eager to dive deeper into playing maqams, I think a comprehensive video explaining the following topics would be incredibly valuable: 1. An Overview of Maqams: A detailed breakdown of what maqams are and their significance in Middle Eastern music. 2. Ajnas/Intervals: A focus on the intervals or ajnas that make up the structure of each maqam, including their specific tonal qualities and how they interact. 3. Typical Phrases: Examples of typical melodic phrases or motifs that characterize certain maqams, and how we can incorporate them into our playing. 4. Practical Tips: Any exercises, approaches, or resources to help saz players begin to feel confident playing within different maqams. I’m sure this kind of content would help us deepen our understanding of Middle Eastern music theory and improve our saz playing technique. Thanks in advance for considering this idea. I look forward to your future videos!

Thanks for this! I'm planning out the video now, and should have it here in the coming days. i'll add your other questions and requests from our private chat: 1. something about intervals, or something which is the same for all maqams 2. how can you move between jins 3. how to improvise within a maqam 4. typical phrases for each maqam
Bin Biriya Te Kiriye - Lesson 2
https://youtu.be/VMqOd-I9NPI?si=CP5GR4CgQDKJbBMN Here is the first part of the song played at full speed. During the vocal section the saz is somewhat copying the voice. Will make another detailed lesson on the instrumental break at the end once you're comfortable with the first part!
