🎸 How to Make Autumn Leaves Sound More Like Music
🎸 Make Autumn Leaves Actually Sound Like Jazz — Not an Etude A common mistake: you’re playing all the “right” notes… but it still sounds stiff. Here’s a 3-level approach to fix that, using real chord formations. 🔹 Level 1 – Gm Only (Feel First) Play the whole form using just Gm formations only (as in the course) 👉 This trains phrasing, pocket, and melodic intent—without overthinking. Example: Over Cm7 Still play Gm (treat it like you're soloing in one mode). 🔹 Level 2 – Split the tune in half: - Over Cm7 and F7, play Cm shapes (C-Eb-G) - Over Bbmaj7 and Ebmaj7, switch to Gm shapes, then return to Cm shapes over the ii–V (Am7b5–D7), and finish on Gm. Now you're not just playing notes—you’re telling a harmonic story. 🔹 Level 3 – Connect Phrases Across the Switch. Don’t just “start fresh” on every chord. Instead: - End your phrase on a chord tone in the next chord - PRO TIP: Comp the tune so much you get bored at it (it will help you improvise) 🎯 This is the exact process I use when demoing Autumn Leaves in lessons and gigs. 🎁 Want a Discount to GuitArmin Premium?
