The other day I was chatting with the guy who works at my local florist... We've spoken many times before. Good guy. But this time, our conversation was different. He'd been struggling with some health issues... Which he mentioned before, but on a surface level. This time I could see he was super stressed out, though… So within 2-3 minutes of our conversation... I managed to uncover the real issue: He thinks he's gonna die. Now, most people would try to comfort him... "You're gonna be fine!" But that's not what he needed. He needed someone to drive the point home so he’d actually listen for once and make a change. So I told him straight up: "The chances of you dying are very high based on what you’re saying." Then I recommended he radically change his diet and lifestyle... Because he probably didn't have much time left to change course. He was shocked, for sure. But here's the thing... Later that day he texted me: "I can do this. I'm going to commit to it." "Do you think it'll work if I follow the plan?" "100% if you stay on it," I said. Which brings me to the point... Every conversation has an emotion underneath it. When someone seems "needy"... They have an unmet NEED that's driving that behavior. However… Most people stay on the surface... "Hey, thanks for speaking to me, everything's great!" But underneath that brave face... There's usually something deeper going on. Your job as a coach is to find that underlying emotion... That unmet need... And create a safe space where they can express it. Most coaches never get there... They stay at surface level... Having the same conversations over and over... Getting the same mediocre results. But when you can get to that emotional core... When you can help someone see what's REALLY holding them back... And then show them the path forward? That’s the moment you know they’re ready to change.

I know every family is different. And I’ve said before how if you’re a coach then then hardest people to coach are your family. At the same time, they’re more often the ones that have you either coaching yourself or seeking coaching from others. So with Christmas approaching, I was with a client this week, and the hardest gift for this client to give this year was the gift of forgiveness. They’re in a position where they can buy all the gifts in the world for anyone they want… They can buy all this stuff… But they won’t forgive. For so many people, there are people this Christmas that won’t be at their Christmas gathering because they have so much bitterness in their heart that they have extradited themselves from their family and friends. How many people do you know that haven’t spoken to their family members for years? And when you get to the root cause of why, it’s usually the smallest of hurts. But at this time of year that hurt is magnified. And the more that hurt is held on to, the worse it becomes. If only they could set themselves free… The gift of forgiveness will begin that process. And it costs nothing. But it’s truly the most valuable.
