Nonprofit colleague, reentry expert, and an exceptional Executive Director who oversees programs that represent all 15 adult correctional facilities in Kansas, 7 in North Carolina and the Transition Center in Kansas City, MO. Thank you to each of you for accepting the invitation to be founding members of this online community of nonprofit and community leaders, consultants and individuals committed to building the strongest businesses possible so the important community work and programming can continue.

New Nonprofit Leader — I Have 3 Questions
I’m currently building Jucoban Community Recovery Foundation, Inc. and making sure we establish the right financial and compliance foundation from the beginning. I would love some insight from those who have already gone through this process. 1. 501(c)(3) Application Fee: Is the IRS filing fee paid at the time the application is submitted, or is there ever an option to be invoiced or pay later? 2. Best Bank for a Growing Nonprofit: What bank or credit union would you recommend for a nonprofit that plans to accept grants and donations and eventually wants access to business credit or lending? I’m especially interested in low fees, good nonprofit banking features, ACH capabilities, and a bank that can grow with an organization planning to operate nationwide. 3. The “Nobody Told Me” Filing: For experienced nonprofit leaders, what is one form, registration, report, compliance requirement, or filing that new nonprofit founders commonly overlook but should know about early? I’m trying to follow one rule as we build: stay ready so we don’t have to get ready. I would rather establish the right systems now than discover something important after a funding opportunity comes along. Thank you for any experience or recommendations you can share!

Hello everyone!
My name is Neisyy, and I’m honored to be here. We joined this community because we want to learn from experienced nonprofit leaders and better understand what it takes to build and sustain an organization that serves communities nationwide. We believe there’s always something new to learn, and we’re excited to connect, share ideas, and grow alongside others who are making a difference. @Sidney Smith, thank you for creating a space where nonprofit leaders can learn, collaborate, and support one another. Consistency truly is the key to building lasting impact. I currently serve as the Chair of the Board, President & Chief Executive Officer of Jucoban Community Recovery Foundation, Inc. We are an Arizona nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals and families achieve stability through housing, recovery support, community resource navigation, veterans assistance, returning citizen support, homelessness prevention, and partnerships with licensed service providers. We’re looking forward to learning from this community, building meaningful relationships, and applying what we learn to strengthen our organization and expand our impact.

@Sidney Smith Thank you for the warm welcome, Sidney! I’m proud to serve as the Board Chair and CEO of Jucoban Community Recovery Foundation. Right now, we’re building a strong leadership team and foundation for long-term success. We have two licensed medical professionals joining our leadership, a dedicated leader in the proposal stage for our sober living initiatives, and an investor who believes in our vision. We’re also actively seeking additional partners and investors as we work toward acquiring our first facility. One thing that is going well is that we’re taking the time to build the organization the right way—with compliance, governance, strategic partnerships, and sustainability at the forefront. Our vision is to create a continuum of support, ranging from independent living and housing stability to partnering with licensed providers for direct care services for those who need them. Applying for grants once the 503 form is approved, I want to make sure the grant writing is correct. My biggest concern is making sure we grow responsibly. It’s easy to move quickly, but I want to ensure every program is compliant, financially sustainable, and truly benefits the communities we serve. My focus is on building an organization that will still be making a difference decades from now, not just today. I’m excited to learn from everyone in this community and look forward to sharing ideas and growing alongside other nonprofit leaders.

Welcome to the Nonprofit Business Lab! I'm genuinely glad you're here.
Let me be upfront with you — this community is brand new. I've been in here mostly talking to myself, and you showing up changes that. So thank you for being one of the early ones. What we're building here is a space for nonprofit and faith-based leaders who are serious about sustainability, revenue, and running their organizations like the businesses they actually are. No fluff. No toxic positivity. Just real conversations from people who are in it. It won't be loud in here right away. And that's okay. The best communities aren't built overnight — they're built by the right people showing up consistently and contributing honestly. If you're here, I already believe you're one of those people. So while we grow, here's what I'd ask: Introduce yourself. Tell us who you are, what organization or work you're connected to, and one thing you're navigating right now. That's it. No pitch. No polish. Just you. I read everything in here and I will respond. This is not a billboard — it's a conversation. We're building something worth being early for.
