A lot of players think recruiting is just about talent, but it's really about visibility, strategy, and timing. 1. Waiting for Coaches to Find Them One of the biggest myths in recruiting is that coaches will just “discover you.” Reality: College coaches recruit thousands of players every year. If you aren’t reaching out, there’s a good chance they’ll never see your film. Fix it: - Email 50–200 college programs - Send your highlight film - Follow up every 3–4 weeks Recruiting is not passive — it’s proactive. 2. Bad Highlight Film Your highlight tape is your first impression. Most QBs make these mistakes: - The film is too long (8–10 minutes) - The best plays aren’t at the beginning - Too many runs instead of throws - No play indicators Coaches want to see decision-making and arm talent immediately. Fix it: - Keep film 3–4 minutes - Put your 5 best throws first - Show deep, intermediate, and pressure throws - Add arrows or circles before the snap A coach usually decides in 20 seconds if you’re worth recruiting. 3. Only Targeting Big D1 Schools Many QBs only email Power 5 schools. That’s a mistake.
