Need your guidance!
I am mechanical engineering 3rd year student, focusing mostly on design and i am interested on automotive and part designs with a little bit of solidworks tutorial practice experience. Need help how to improve in design and what practices would help me.

I'm no engineer but I'm all self taught. What has worked for me is designing something and having it manufactured right after. From there I learn throughout the entire process. When your investing your time and money to make a part, you naturally will confirm every aspect of your project. Once its in your hands and assembled, you can make adjustments or revisions. Very rarely ill nail something first time and I'm ok with it. Its part of learning. If your not learning, you are not growing. At my day job. All the engineers do the same thing. They design, make and assembly immediately. They will work closely with us in the shop for DFM. They don't always nail it first time either but they see with their hands why something didn't work and they adjust from there. A little tip, most 3d printing and CNC milled parts will have different manufactured tolerance. (IE a press fit on my 3d printed part is .003" oversized hole. CNC milled is .001" undersized) Hopefully that was somewhat helpful.
What have you gotten done in 2026?
January is over and the year is in full swing. Let us know in the comments of this post what you have been working on this year so far. Pics & screenshots highly appreciated. Also, check out a sneak preview of my latest design. Video coming soon-ish, still more work do do!

Nice work Nate! January I finished up (I hope the last revision) of this air compressor mount and battery hold down that fits inside of the engine bay of a 2023+ Ford Super Duty with the 7.3 gas engine. I need to CNC mill the battery hold down and I'm waiting on OSH Cut to send me the bent sheet metal. Once test fitment is good, they will be available for purchase!

The front bumper was installed in January as well! But this was over 6 months of designing and assembling. Everything was done in house besides the sheet metal bends. OSH cut did that for me as well. Great company to work with!
File Organization
Hey all! I'm curious how does everyone organize their projects or jobs? I feel like organizations of our files is just as important as designing the parts. Especially when it comes time for revisions and manufacturing. In my line of work I design parts for my business and the other half I do job shop work for customers (3d scanning, 3d CAD and help customers find manufactures to produce their parts) For my job shop work, the folder tree starts with the Customer Name. Within their name I have their invoice or quote number of their job. Once inside the invoice or quote number I'll have a folder for engineering and manufacturing. I like to keep the original engineered part separate from the manufactured part so that I always have the original part. (saved as copy) Engineering folder will have everything related to designing that part. Ill have a folder for Hardware, References, Prints and 3mf for 3d printing prototypes. Manufacturing folder stays pretty clear with just the CAD file, STEP file and drawing. For my business, its very similar. I start with the vehicle manufacture first but it gets very much cluttered as there are lots of, vehicle models, type of part (armor, brackets, electrical), revisions, references and months to years of developing parts. I'd like to clean up my business folder so I'm curious to what everyone is doing.

Exciting! Need to get caught up from all the other great videos
Intro
Hey all! I’m Casey from Maine, I own and operate Expedition Off-Road Development. Looking to learn from you all and be apart of this great community! My background is over a decade as a heavy duty diesel technician. So lots of hands on experience in the field and working closely with engineers. Now I’m in manufacturing. Currently a CNC programmer with an automation/robotics company. Manufacturing everything in house! So my specialty is DFM. Only have about 3 years experience with Solidworks but I’m on it everyday 10+ hours. Still feel like I have so much to learn but love it!

@Nate Wilkerson right now focusing on Armor. Bumpers, sliders and eventually get into flatbeds with canopy. We don’t have an overland style flatbed manufacturer on the east coast so I’d like to tap into the market. And I’d like to offer more CNC milled parts rather than the traditional sheet metal weldments
