I prefer descriptions such as non-speaking, minimally speaking, or using some words, because they tell us more about how a child is communicating right now without assuming that every child is following the same path towards spoken language. Some children are taking their own path towards communication. That doesn't mean there is nothing we can do to support them. There are practical, evidence-based ways to make communication easier, more meaningful and more rewarding at home.
