Chained & balcony dogs to be freed, Parabéns 111 year-old Joaquim & $6.3 billion crypto hack?!
On Friday 30th October 2026, Carl Munson’s Good Morning Portugal! news leads with Portuguese rural worker Joaquim Varela becoming Europe’s oldest living man at 111; he remains mentally sharp and vocal on social issues, while 110-year-old Idalina Moniz is Portugal’s second-oldest citizen. The Assembleia da República has passed two bills restricting permanent chaining of companion animals, banning pain-causing collars, and prohibiting pets on balconies; the measures still require presidential promulgation and are not yet enforced. Other headlines include one in five luxury homes in Portugal selling within 30 days, activists discussing the future of the housing movement in Lisbon and Porto, the former Tupperware factory in Constância sold for €4 million, the Lisbon mayor criticising an insurer for describing a funicular as unreliable, and a fall in the number of children in state care. Weather is mild and overcast, with Lisbon at 27°C and Évora 26°C. (Natasha Donn joins for the Portugal Resident news review at 09:15am, every Friday)

Dogs on balconies, 'garden' dogs that live outside the family home permanently. All day incessant barking being treated like bird song, it is one of the true, few negatives of life in Portugal. Check your neighbours before you buy a home.
Signs of Spring!
I think we need this, muito obrigado to @Bob Wenger for getting us started... "Daffodils are blooming here in Ponte de Lima. Spring must be coming!!"

Thursday, Quinta, 8th May, 2025: Current & Currency?
Olá bom dia alegria! Tudo bem? Munson's Midday Moment is back, and feeling good! See you at Noon, Portugal time, for a bit of peace and calm? Check it out LIVE on the YouTube channel. I'll be recording this morning with another Carl, not @Carl Hyde, but Carl McAdam, who's been experimenting an with off-grid, electrical kit, in Central Portugal. The Currency Coach @Sarah Davie also in the studio, celebrating a year in Portugal, and updating us on the money markets. We will be looking at the SpartanFX rates. Join me for both recording sessions, 8.20 & 8.40, and ask your own questions, on this link. A slightly slow start for me this morning after a pleasant evening with the lads at my local Men's Shed, but I still beat the dawn at around 6.31. Sunset at around 20:35 tonight, with the days still 'getting longer'. Yesterday lunchtime saw a very pleasant meetup too with a good mix of new and familiar faces in São Martino Do Porto. Continuing on the district tour, and on to Faro, where there's a 40% chance of rain today! That's according to IPMA, who are suggesting a low there of 11°C/52°F and a high of 20°C/70°F, with some sunshine in the early evening after a rainy day. QUIZ: What were @Sarah Davie and her dad doing in the pics, attached?! ***NO birds or nests harmed in the making of...***

No! No more Carls! I'm not having it! He doesn't even have the decency to spell it with a 'K'.

Thank you, Carl. It's a fantastic apartment, high quality throughout, built to an excellent standard and right in the heart of the city with the CGD HQ and now location of many government departments right next door!
I lost (and found) my mobile/cell phone in Portugal (a thread)
Lost my phone last Sunday morning and quite liked the freedom. UNTIL I realised the full consequences! Like: - Two-factor identification would be impossible - No camera - No livestreaming device On the upside - Whatsapp desktop continued to work - It was locked with code/biometrics Here's what I did... 1. Visited local GNR to see if phone had been handed in 2. Then went to mobile service provide (Vodafone in this case) next day, when certain it was lost. 3. Was given a new SIM in store, and instructions for deactivation and transfer of old number to new sim (see pic) 4. Tried to deactivate phone at a cafe, pressing random numbers, and hoping for the best, when facing some VERY FAST Portuguese instructions. (There was a "Press 9 for English" option, which didn't work on first call) 5. Tried again at home, with better luck 6. Criteria required are detailed and include: NIF, post code, amount of last bill and date paid (so logged in to Vodafone simultaneously). English option worked, and phone was deactivated. 7. Had a brainwave to look on social media, to see phone had been found! 8. Regretted deactivating phone BEFORE looking on social media 9. Went to collect phone, and had a beer with inn-keepers to celebrate! 10. Haven't transferred to new SIM yet, will update later...

Nightmare! Not sure if you had it, but I highly recommend downloading 'Google Find My Device', You can remote call your phone, have a reward message appear on the screen, remote erase all data too. You can add all of the phones in your household, could be a life saver if it happens again.
