Yves Saint Laurent is one of the better designer fragrance houses because, for the most part, they understand what people actually want to wear. They make fragrances that are attractive, versatile, modern, and easy to reach for without smelling cheap or poorly put together. YSL is not always the most original house, especially with some of its newer releases, but originality is not the only thing that matters. A fragrance still has to smell good, wear well, and serve a purpose in a collection. YSL usually does that better than a lot of designer houses. The Y line is probably the easiest example. Y Eau de Parfum is not some groundbreaking artistic fragrance, but it is a very effective modern blue scent. It is fresh, sweet, aromatic, youthful, and strong enough to get noticed. It works casually, at work, on a date, or going out at night. It is one of those fragrances that covers a lot of situations without requiring much thought. The different Y flankers also give people options. Some are fresher, some are darker, and some are smoother or more mature. There can be some redundancy within the line, but they are not all exactly the same fragrance in different bottles. Someone who really enjoys the Y DNA can find enough differences to justify owning more than one, although most people probably do not need the entire line. La Nuit de L’Homme is still one of the most important fragrances YSL has made. The cardamom opening is immediately recognizable, and the overall scent is smooth, warm, spicy, and seductive without becoming overly sweet or heavy. It became a standard for date-night fragrances, and a lot of releases that came after it were clearly trying to capture the same feeling. The biggest complaint with La Nuit de L’Homme is performance. It smells great, but depending on the version, it can sit closer to the skin and fade faster than people expect. That does not make it a bad fragrance, but it does make the retail price harder to justify. A fragrance can smell excellent and still deserve criticism if the performance does not match the cost.

Today's SOTD is a fragrance I'm debating on making my signature scent. I recently ran out of Polo 67 EDP, and I decided to smell this scent out of curiosity at Ulta Beauty. What do you guys think of this one? I'm considering buying it. I'm not used to the scent but this is the second time I've given it a second shot on my skin. There's a nice 'iced mango' opening but it then dries down to a woody layer that smells a little aquatic through my nose despite the lack of such notes. Year rounder, but notably suitable for spring/summer. It's unique for not having any flankers but I got the impression from other people that the fragrance is signature scent worthy, and for people who were introduced to it years ago in 2005 and still wear it now, my impression is that it's also a timeless scent. My impression, is that it's a more suitable scent to wear as I get old (I'm in my early 30s), as Polo 67 EDT/EDP/EDP Extreme are a product of the trend of sweet fragrances that have taken over the market right now; is it weird that I feel too old wearing Polo 67? A question I've been thinking about lately. Performance is around 5-6 hours, but some people's skins indicate that it lasted up to 6-8 hours. The fragrance has been reformulated but it's reported there isn't much of a difference. In any case, 4.2 oz / 125 ml bottles of Polo Black is on sale at JOMASHOP for $46.54, down from $116 retail. Match #13 in my 40-fragrance tournament is a true blue-on-blue showdown: Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum versus YSL Y Le Parfum (2025). These are two fragrances I'd happily wear any day of the year, so this was one of the toughest decisions so far. Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum (2014, created by Jacques Polge) is the definition of understated sophistication. Its blend of grapefruit, incense, ginger, cedar, and sandalwood is smooth, versatile, and effortlessly elegant. YSL Y Le Parfum (reformulated in 2025, created by Dominique Ropion) takes the familiar Y DNA and adds a beautiful fir tree note alongside apple, sage, patchouli, and woods. It feels a little bolder than the Chanel, with stronger projection while maintaining excellent versatility. According to Fragrantica, these two are fairly similar in longevity, but that's not what happens on my skin. Bleu de Chanel fades much sooner than it seems to for most people, while Y Le Parfum just keeps going. In the end, this matchup came down to the dry-down, and that's where the YSL pulled ahead. I know I'm probably committing fragrance heresy here, but if I had never smelled either of these before and tested them blind, I'd pick the YSL. So that's my winner today. Y Le Parfum advances, while Bleu de Chanel heads to the loser's bracket.

If you haven’t tried anything from Darren Alan yet, he’s an independent perfumer who does an incredible job of creating fragrances that feel like an actual place instead of just a collection of notes. Today’s wear was Big Island, and it really lives up to the name. It opens with juicy guava and lychee, but this isn’t a sunscreen or beach vacation scent. It smells like you’re walking through lush tropical vegetation with the ocean nearby and volcanic landscapes surrounding you. It’s fresh, vibrant, and incredibly well done. Notes: Guava, Lychee, Plumeria, Wild Orchid, Ocean Breeze, Volcanic Earth, Hawaiian Honey. One thing to know is that Big Island is a limited Perfume of the Month release for July 2026. Once this batch sells out, it’s gone. If it sounds like something you’d enjoy, I’d recommend picking it up sooner rather than later.
