What Happens in my Head...Now on a Slide.
I honestly think this might be one of the most important comedy teaching slides I’ve ever created. Not because the joke is brilliant… …but because it finally shows WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS in a veteran comedian’s brain while creating a joke. And yes… I now think “creating” is a better word than “writing.” Because this process is: * exploring * associating * following thoughts * trusting the subconscious * connecting dots * escalating ideas * and following the funny wherever it leads So the other night I was driving and I said I am going to write a bit about the first thing I see. Bits are all I think about because it allows me to go on a journey or down the rabbit hole. Then I drove past Costco. I know very pedestrian, but I saw that as a challenge. This Costco bit started with: 👉 “I drove past Costco.” That’s it. Then I used what I call: 👉 The Rabbit Hole Method 👉 Use Soft Eyes to see the Funny 👉 Then Follow the Funny Where it Takes you. And I let the journey happen. Capturing everything along the way but not worrying about actually writing a joke. This is also the bare bones version of the bit. Before I’d ever bring it to the stage I’d continue building it, punching it up, adding tags, act outs, transitions and more layers. But for TEACHING… I wanted to strip it down so students could finally SEE the process. It took me 17 years of doing 300 shows a year to fully rewire my brain to think this way and I learned from some of the greatest comedians to ever do it. The interesting thing? They all do this. They just never put it on a slide. So I felt like I had to. Would genuinely love to know if this helps you rethink joke writing, creativity or comedy in general.

Matt: your example here is very eye opening for me. I often encounter situations where I find them funny or strange and try to get them on paper for potential comedic bits. What I find useful is to send myself an email of the experience without trying to find the funny (yet). Once the email is completed then I separate the sentences and try to add punchlines and tags, etc. By separating the sentences I can also cut words out and potentially shorten the setups. I am more of a comedy novice but I find this often works for me.

Quick question for everyone in the community… How many of you would actually come to LIVE Joke Writing Office Hours if I started doing them weekly? I currently have one scheduled for next month… But honestly, if there’s enough interest, I’ll do one NEXT WEEK. 😂 And the whole idea is simple: You bring me: ➡️ stories ➡️ awkward moments ➡️ speeches ➡️ ideas ➡️ observations ➡️ failed jokes ➡️ random thoughts ➡️ presentations ➡️ anything …and I’ll break down how I would turn it into something funny, stronger, and more engaging in REAL TIME. Because funny isn’t random. There is a system to funny and I would love to show you how I do it. I started performing at 3 years old and I’ve spent my entire life studying this craft: 🎤 Comedy 🧠 Humor 🎙 Connection ✍ Storytelling 😂 Audience psychology And one thing I know for sure is… People learn FAST when they actually WATCH funny get built. Not theory. Not motivational quotes. Not memes. The real process. That’s why I think these Office Hours could become one of the coolest parts of this community. So let me know below 👇 Would you actually show up if I did one next week? And if you WOULD come… What would you bring me to work on?

Welcome to the They Laugh. You Win. Community
Welcome to They Laugh. You Win. It’s not that you’re not funny…you just don’t know how to write a joke. And more importantly—you haven’t been shown how to use humor as a tool. That’s what this community is about. 🎯 Who this is for: Speakers. Coaches. Entrepreneurs. Educators. Comics. Anyone who wants to: - Connect faster - Be more engaging - Be remembered when they speak Whether that’s on stage, on Zoom, or in real life. 🧠 What we’re doing here: I’m breaking down the exact system I’ve used for 38+ years as a comedian and coach to help people: - Turn real stories into real laughs - Build confidence by knowing what works - Connect with any audience (not just “be funny”) This is not theory. This is usable. 🚀 What’s coming next: I’ll be dropping courses right here inside the community, including: 👉 Don’t Bomb the Wedding Toast(If you—or someone you know—is giving a toast… this will save them) 👉 Joke Writing Made Easy: The Workshop(My full system for turning your ideas into actual jokes that land) 💬 Let’s make this interactive: Drop a comment below: - Are you a speaker, business owner, comic or something else? - What situations do you wish you were more confident or funny in? Or just ask me anything. Seriously—throw me something awkward, real, or painful…👉 I’ll show you how to make it funny. Because when They Laugh. You win.

My one liner style of comedy revolves around ny wacky family, equally quirky friends, and my observations on the madness of the world around me.
