Bradford grandfather described in court as a senior Mafia leader will be released from prison on limited parole after being convicted seven years ago on drug importing charges. Giuseppe Ursino, 73, has been granted day parole for six months but denied full parole, the parole board announced Tuesday. Ursino was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison in February 2019 for conspiring to traffic more than a kilogram of cocaine, two counts of the commission of a crime for a criminal organization and possession of less than $5,000 of property obtained He was described in court by an undercover police agent as a senior leader of the ‘Ndrangheta strain of the Mafia. He was also described as a first-time federal offender. Paid police agent Carmine Guido told his 2019 trial that Ursino was a senior member of the board of directors of the ‘Ndrangheta in the GTA - called the “Camera Di Controllo.” Ursino testified he didn’t know what that meant and that his own secretly recorded words shouldn’t be taken too seriously either. “The stupid words come out of my mouth,” Ursino testified. “What I’m talking is one thing. What I mean is another.” Guido was given a new identity and relocated by police but was kicked out of the witness protection program in 2016. The parole board decision noted Ursino had told the police agent he was the leader of a criminal organization.

Johnson, a reputed New York mobster and close associate of John Gotti, was gunned down as he walked toward his car outside his Brooklyn home, bringing a violent end to the life of a man who had spent years moving between two worlds, one inside organized crime and the other in secret cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Johnson was not a minor informant. According to court records and testimony that later emerged, he had provided information to the FBI for roughly nineteen years, beginning in 1966 and continuing until 1985. The FBI reportedly knew him by the code name “Wahoo,” and the information he supplied reached into the inner workings of the Gambino crime family and the activities of John Gotti and other organized-crime figures. Yet Johnson’s position inside the mob made his cooperation especially valuable. He was close enough to men at the center of the organization to hear things that investigators desperately wanted to know, while his reputation as a tough and dependable street figure helped keep suspicion away from him for years. He was known on the street as Willie Boy, a physically imposing enforcer who had earned a reputation for violence, while to the FBI he was something entirely different: a source with access to the very people federal agents were trying to penetrate. The contradiction was almost impossible to sustain forever, however, and in 1985 the secret began to collapse.
