'P' is for Pastel de Nata (of course!)

Viv just had a conversation about pastel de nata with her granddaughter last night. She just found a new bakery near her apartment in Colorado, and they feature the pastel de nata. She loves them, and schedules her day to get one. We were shocked she had never eaten one. She and a friend visited us a couple of years ago after traveling across Europe from Poland for a month. But she remembered that she was so burnt out on pastries by the time they got here, she never tried a pastel de nata. Now she has to get one before they're all gone - in Colorado!
Monday Briefing! Feliz agosto!!
Thanks @Bob Wenger, Viv, @Brian Mathers & @Peter Haglund for committing to your missions for the week. Desculpe @Lori Wong, sorry we didn't get to you, but message me separately please πŸ™ @Carl Munson's personal missions for the week... missions for the week 1. Dissect a formal Portuguese letter - Overcome the β€œcourt summons” feeling of official mail (banks, insurers, etc.). He plans a module on letter formalities/grammar. 2. Learn a Portuguese song (aim for karaoke-level; even β€œHappy Birthday” counts). Future online karaoke idea floated. 3. Escalate an existing mission - e.g., his own neighbor/atestado task (ask the parish president + another resident to accompany him). 4. β€œBreak the spell” - Identify habitual self-blocks (β€œI’m too old,” β€œI’m bad at languages,” etc.) and work on them by Friday. He’ll write about common reasons people avoid speaking. 5. Teach someone else a bit of Portuguese (even a short household mini-lesson). People can pick from these, invent their own, or use classroom missions; review on Friday. What VIPs committed to - Viv: Read a letter; escalate a mission; β€œring this bell”; teach β€œhim” some Portuguese. Possibly learn a song. - Bob: Keep talking to his dog Gus in Portuguese + learn more commands. Prepare language for the neighbor lady on walks (especially explaining the dog is fixed/castrated β€” β€œes dominado?” situation). Learn the Happy Birthday song. Expand neighbor conversations (tech/DIY, farm/tractor talk, etc.). Essentially several neighbor + pet-focused tasks. - Peter & Brian (Mathers Haglund household): Do banking in Portuguese. Visit the Mercado (Governo) in SetΓΊbal. Go to β€œSunsets at the Castle” (SΓ£o Jorge) in Lisbon on a Saturday and try speaking with people there. Brian also: learn the birthday song + possibly read a letter. - Ongoing: watching cartoons, an RTP 1 human-interest show, the game show Agarra se Puderes (β€œCatch Me If You Can”), and PreΓ§o Certo.

REMINDER: See you upgraded premium people (VIPs) at the Friday de-brief, 5pm today, to discuss your week. Bring a drink!] πŸ—£οΈ VocabulΓ‘rio: - o rei - the king - o tratado - the treaty - o poder - power - implacΓ‘vel - ruthless, unrelenting πŸ’¬ "D. JoΓ£o II dividiu o mundo entre Portugal e Espanha." ❓ Hora do quiz: Porque Γ© que D. JoΓ£o II recusou financiar CristΓ³vΓ£o Colombo?

Bom dia, Carl e todos. Carl, I haven’t found the connection point for the language challenge. I’m much more intentional than I have been, one test I’m giving myself is when I get an email in Portuguese, rather than translate it straight away, I read it into DeepL to see if it understands and translates to English accurately.
'F' is for Fado / Monday briefing heads-up, 9am PT
[OlΓ‘ bom dia! The briefing is for all PREMIUM members AND anyone who upgrades before 9am today)] --- πŸ“ A mΓΊsica da alma portuguesa - uma canção urbana nascida nas ruas de Lisboa que expressa saudade, destino e emoção humana profunda. πŸ’‘ A palavra fado vem do latim fatum - destino. πŸ—£οΈ VocabulΓ‘rio: a saudade - a deep longing or nostalgia o fadista - the fado singer a guitarra portuguesa - the Portuguese guitar o destino - fate, destiny πŸ’¬ "O fado Γ© a mΓΊsica da alma de Portugal."
