My name is Blake McArthur. I'm 68 years old, semi-retired and am from Canada. I started learning guitar a year or so ago, and my primary goal on the guitar is simply to develop some basic skills that will allow me to play with confidence.
It's interesting to think that everyone has their own back story, and their own reason for wanting to play. I certainly hope that guitar was able to help with your depression. It has certainly helped me emotionally, despite the earlly frustration. I find it challenging enough to play as a right hander - I can only imagine that being left handed would bring an additional set of challenges to overcome. If you're looking for an acoustic, you should check out Furch guitars. They are made in the Czech Republic, and available through a few select music stores here in Canada. I discovered them through the Alamo Music YouTube channel, and was able to find a dealer located about an hour away from me. They are apparently one of the fastest growing acoustic guitar brands, and based on what I've seen/heard of them, it's easy to understand why. Most of their models are available in left hand versions. They sound way better than I can play, that's for sure, and built quality is amazing.
I started trying to learn back in 2022, but was hampered by carpal tunel syndrome which resulted in my left hand basically becoming numb after only a few minutes. I had surgery to address that in September 2024, which made a world of difference. I progressed more in the first month after recovering from the surgery than I did in the 2 years prior. Now, my biggest challenge is trying to stay focused - I always seem to get sidetracked and don't seem to stick to one thing to truly improve.
