I just had a call with a high-level publishing agent. The outcome surprised me...
Yesterday was a big day for me. I had a call with Lucinda Halpern, president of Lucinda Literary, to pitch an idea for my book. Lucinda has worked with some of my favorite authors (Dan Martell, Benjamin Hardy, Mike Michalowicz) and secured a lot of six-figure publishing deals for her clients with big-name publishers. Although self-publishing has served me well, I wanted to go to the next level and start getting publishing deals, to get more brand exposure & credibility in my space. I practiced my "pitch" over and over before our call. When the call started, Lucinda told me, "I'm going to shoot straight with you. I'll be honest if your idea won't work". A bit nervous, I began. I dove into my background of real estate investing, pivoting to coaching, writing niche books, and how I have generated 7 figures from niche books (in coaching/consulting fees, not book royalties). I showed how my approach was counterintuitive to the advice of "write widely appealing business books", and how most businesses get rich with a niche at the end of the day. The idea I pitched? Republish "Get Clients With a Book" under a new name, like "The Niche Book Strategy" or "Write Small, Win Big". The book would teach many of the same ideas, potentially broadening the concept to make it more marketable. I shared case studies from my own books and those of my clients, several of whom have 7 & 8-figure businesses and large social followings and regularly get clients from their books. I had no idea how she would respond. I honestly thought the idea was too "niche" (ironically), and I knew I would stay true to my offer and keep plugging away if she said no. I would just self-publish the updated version and keep going. After talking for nearly ten minutes, I stopped. "So what do you think?" To my surprise, she said, "I love it. This can work. We signed a guy just like you with a similar idea, and he got a six-figure deal, and he had no social media platform either." I was in shock. Me, worthy of a publishing deal?
