Jackie Shane
I feel like I’m gonna spend the rest of my life spreading the gospel of Jackie Shane. For the uninitiated: Jackie was a transgender soul dynamo that fled her Nashville roots to find huge success in Toronto’s booming local music scene in the late 60s. The success never went all that much further than the regional footprint, although legend has it she turned Ed Sullivan down when the appearance was made contingent on performing “as a man.” Jackie was largely lost to history (outside Toronto) until 2017 when the good folks at Numero Group unearthed her local singles and her 1967 live record (which f—ing RIPS) and rereleased a slick 2-record comp. That album earned Jackie a Grammy nomination and plans were put in motion to mount a small but triumphant comeback tour. Alas, it was not to be, and Jackie died in 2019. Her life and career was also the foundation of a documentary feature (Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story) that tells her story far better than I ever could in this crude little recap. It won the 2025 Peabody Award for docs. Just doing my bit to spread the word, but if you’re interested, do check out the live record (the comp has left streaming for some reason) and/or the doc trailer in the links below! https://music.apple.com/ca/album/live/999875184 https://open.spotify.com/album/3vSxh2Ek2w11SkhS86Um8q Trailer: https://youtu.be/xnlvygHhqrM

Thanks for sharing! I'm always open to more soul music and rarely pass up a music documentary. I'll be looking out for the documentary and think I'll get to checking out the music ASAP.
5x5 Friday
Plash made a splash at #1. A heavy dose of Maita and Game Theory this week, and a healthy dose of ska. #5x5 #LastFM #music #FridayGrid #NowPlaying

This week made a 5x5 with a mix of looking back and looking ahead. I still haven’t made it to a show this year, but the plan is to celebrate my birthday by getting out to a show.

@Howie Cohen Thanks! I try to vary my listening in general. I was bummed to not be back in Seattle for the recent shows Rocky played at Tractor. Suzzallo's debut record, in my opinion, is what many bands hope for but don't necessarily have the ability to pull off. Such a great album from beginning to end.
Concert list
First concert - The Box (at The Forum in Toronto) Last concert - Sam Fender Best Concert - three way tie - Pink Floyd Division Bell, and New Order/P.I.L./The Sugarcubes, and Vampire Weekend Worst concert- Red Hot Chili Peppers at Lollapalooza Loudest concert - Frontline Assembly Best sounding - Robert Cray Band Seen the most - Tool Most surprising - Metric Most unusual - Skinny Puppy Craziest - Korn Next Concert - The Last Dinner Party Wish I had seen - INXS Copy and Paste-Let’s see yours

@Robert Erbes I think the first time, I had no idea. It was a festival and while they played in the middle of the afternoon, it was hard to forget. I saw them a second time and specifically wore a white shirt to see what it would look like courtesy of their show.

@Shane McNeil It was all a laugh at the end of the day. I believe the shirt was retired to the trash within a few days. It made for a funny story, but the smell was horrendous
What are you listening to?
Let’s not overthink this… what’s on your turntable or streamer of choice or whatever today? I try to only spin black artists in Feb. in honour of Black History Month, so I’ve kicked things off with this incredible find from Vinyl Me, Please.

Currently listening to Plastic Planet by g//z/r, which was the first of a few solo records helmed by Geezer Butler. I just finished his memoir, Into the Void, and realized I hadn't heard any of the songs before. I immediately hear what he talked about with the songs surprising many people since he was primarily known as the bassist of Black Sabbath. Four songs in and I wouldn't be surprised if current rock and metal fans could find this record appealing.
5x5 Friday
Even more local than usual this past week, with a lot of great new releases in the PNW (I'm counting Jo Passed out of Vancouver BC as local too). This reflects a lot of local music seen lately (Jo Passed, Rocky Votolato, Versing) and upcoming (Plash tonight for the record release show!), Dining Dead tomorrow, Sour Widows and Remember Sports on the spring show calendar for me. In the chaos of the world and the US in particular, music is a refuge, a balm, and support to fight for what's right.

This 5x5 reflects bands I’m hoping to see live this year, bands I miss, and a general need for the refuge of art as Howie touched on. As I nervously and excitedly prepare a couple of job applications that will change things drastically for me, I’m again reminded how the right soundtrack is a great motivator. Artists featured in the 5x5: The 1865, Blackbraid, Brooke Ligertwood, Cemetery Skyline, Charles Mingus, Cleo Sol, Converge, Corrosion of Conformity, Dark Tranquillity, Death Angel, Einar Solberg, Herbie Hancock, Holyname, Joni Mitchell, Metallica, Napalm Death, Nasum, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Sleeping Giant, Wayne Shorter, Weather Report, & William Fitzsimmons.
