G’day legends 👋
Just a quick heads-up. All existing members — you’re here for life, free. Nothing changes for you. 🤫From here on though, I’m going to charge $3 a month for new members only. Why? Simply to stop scammers and bots joining and wasting time — and to keep this space full of people who actually want to be here. This place is for: - 🎨 The Mum who's raised the kids and now wants to reconnect with her art - 🛠️ The Dad who worked all his life and never realised he could paint and wants to try it out - 🖌️ The beginner who just wants a few solid tips without learning the hard way - 🌱 Anyone chasing inspiration, confidence, and creative possibilities If that ruffles a few feathers, all good — I’ll catch ya later 👋But moving forward, it’s $3/month for new members only. Real talk: even if only 10 people join at $3, that covers the platform costs and keeps this community running — no ads, no noise, no nonsense. Past members pay nothing! This stays our little creative corner of the internet. Cheers legends 🎨🍻

🎨 OK LEGENDS — TRY THIS! 🎨
If colour mixing ever feels confusing or intimidating, this little exercise will help clear the fog. No pressure, no right or wrong — just have a play. 🔴 Step 1: Red + White Put two dobs of red on your palette. Add two dobs of white. Gradually mix them together. Slow it right down and watch how many pinks you pass through — from strong rose to soft blush tones. Using your palette knife separate a portion and mix either the straight red or the straight white to strengthen or soften the tones. 🧑 Step 2: From Pink to Flesh Tone. Take the pink you just made.Very gently mix in a tiny dob of raw sienna. You’ve now got a natural flesh tone. Try this:• More white = lighter skin• More raw sienna = warmer skin• A touch of blue = cooler shadow tones This is how portraits start making sense. You can try adding a little yellow Ochre but this will give your flesh tone a more yellow look. Have a play and see what you come up with. No right or wrong here just experimenting and building confidence. 🔵🟡 Step 3: Blue + Yellow (Separate exercise) Put two dobs of blue on your palette. Add two dobs of yellow. Mix slowly. You’ll see greens ranging from olive to bright grass depending on the balance. If it goes muddy — good. That means you’re learning what too much looks like. Different Yellows will alter the tones as well. Again separate a portion and either mix more blue or more Yellow to see what happens. 🎯 The Goal - You’re not trying to paint a masterpiece. You’re training your eye, your brush control, and your palette knife skills. In the end if you do it enough you will just get a sense of what colour you need to mix to achieve the tone you're after By mixing slowly and deliberately, you’re learning how to control the paint instead of letting it get away from you. Less mess. More intention. Play with the colours. Watch them change. That’s where confidence really comes from. Hope this helps get you motivated, Cheers, Heff 🎨

Love it! I also posted this as a YouTube quiz and 29% got it right. Even some in there that usually ace it got this one wrong. I think I would have went with D to be honest. Acrylics do have their limitations but I love them. Non toxic water clean up and quick drying time makes it a no brainer for me. No smell and kid friendly are reason why I stuck with them after starting out as an oil painter myself. So with all that said here is the big reveal.... 🎨 Answer Reveal Most people went with C — and that’s the correct one ✅ Acrylics are water-based, so as they dry the water evaporates and the acrylic polymer binder dries clear. This changes how light reflects off the pigment, often making colours appear duller. Oils stay optically consistent, which is why they look closer to palette colour. With acrylics, layering, glazing, and varnish bring the true colour back.
