Our 2-Week Challenge: 3-Minute Daily Reset⏱️
Hey y'all! As some of you know, I’m in the middle of a big international move right now, packing up boxes and staring at an endless to-do list. When life gets this busy, it’s easy to think, "I don't have time to sit down and draw today." But here’s the secret: drawing doesn't require a quiet studio or hours of uninterrupted focus! Sometimes, it’s just about giving your brain a pause button. Over the next two weeks, I’m making a commitment to draw for just 3 minutes a day, not only to keep up my drawing practice, but for my own sanity. Drawing is my meditation. I'm hoping you'll join me! 🦋 For the next 14 days, let's keep it ultra-simple: just draw for 3 minutes, once a day. - Set a timer on your phone for 3 minutes (or just play your favorite song!) - Grab whatever tool is nearby - pen, marker, anything (but if it's a pencil, avoid erasing) - Pick one thing right in front of you - your coffee cup, your shoe, your house keys, a potted plant... - Draw until the timer goes off, then stop! Don't overthink it, don't erase, & don't worry about whether it looks "right" or "finished." 🦋 Even when life is chaotic, we can all carve out 3 minutes to breathe and make a few marks on paper. It keeps the daily sketchbook habit alive, clears the mental fog, and reminds us that drawing is meant to be a grounding escape, not just another item on our checklist. 🦋 How to participate: Drop a photo of your quick 3-minute sketch in the comments of this thread whenever you complete one! You can post daily or drop a few at once at the end of the week. I’ll be sharing my own 3-minute daily sketches right alongside you whenever the moving chaos allows! Who’s in? Drop a ⏱️ below if you’re joining the challenge!

Artist's choice week! Pick your fave!
Hey friends, this week's drawing prompt is to pick your fave from the ten that I've shared so far and give it another go. Maybe change up the drawing tools that you use and see how that affects your work. These prompts are all wonderful for doing over and over again! So have fun filling up your sketchbook, and don't forget to share your sketch with us here!

@Karin Williams this is so good! Nice job!
Prompt #9: Nature Finds & Textural Studies
Hey everyone! For this week’s low-pressure still life, we’re looking to nature for inspiration. Grab a few found objects from the outdoors: rocks, dried leaves, seed pods, shells, bark, etc. and focus on finding a contrast of textures (smooth vs. rough, sleek vs. jagged). 🌿 A few tips for your page: - Focus on texture over precision: Don't worry about getting the proportions perfectly accurate. Focus on descriptive contour lines and capturing how the surfaces feel. - Zero in on what excites you: Highlight a favorite tiny detail or a subtle color that catches your eye. - Help the eye "read" the drawing: If your initial line drawing feels a little messy or hard to parse, try layering in varied hatch marks, line weights, or pops of color to help separate overlapping forms. 🌿 I used a handful of seashells for mine and had so much fun leaning into the ridges on that tiny crab claw and bringing out the subtle pinks and oranges! Grab your natural found objects, fill a page in your sketchbook, and share your drawing in the comments below. I’d love to see what you forage this week! 👇

@Karin Williams we have a ton, too, and it makes us a nervous wreck. With all the rain we have gotten there are hundreds and hundreds in our back yard. And we just got a little rescue who likes to eat them! 😬. So we go out and pick them every day and throw them in the trash! LOL

@Patrick Hempton wow! They both are good, but that bottom one is amazing!
Prompt #7: Quick n' Colorful, Textural Still Life 🍋🥑
Time to raid the produce drawer! This week, we’re keeping things fresh and low-pressure by playing with heightened color and bold mark-making to create texture. 🎨 Your Challenge: 1. Grab 3 or 4 fruits or veggies. Get a variety of smooth and rough textures. 2. Set your light: Use one strong light source for simple but dramatic shadows, or set up under two overhead lights to get interesting overlapping shadow shapes (like in my example). 3. Pick your palette: Grab markers, colored pencils, or basic office supplies (a black pen, a blue pen, and a highlighter will work beautifully if you don't have art supplies at hand). 💡 Focus Points: - Wild colors welcome: Leave realism at the door! Feel free to draw a purple avocado or a bright green garlic bulb, or get even wackier. - Light vs. Dark (the art term for this is "value"): Use a deep, dark color for the darkest shadows under the objects, a medium color for lighter cast shadows, and a light color (or your paper) for well-lit areas to create contrast. - Suggest, don't obsess: Don't worry about drawing every single dimple on a lemon or bump on an avocado. A few quick stippling dots or loopy lines are all your brain needs to read the texture. Less is more, and it keeps you from getting lost in the details when drawing! 👇 Drop a photo of your textural study in the comments! Let's see those fabulous lines & marks!

@Beth Hempton I shied away from the Tombow markers when I saw the price…and purchased some less expensive ones. I am not sure if I like them, yet… so I may have to bite the bullet and get the tombows in the future 🤣

@Beth Hempton I will keep watching for the best price! Thanks, Beth!
Prompt #6: 1 Object, 5 Ways
Ever notice how simple everyday items get surprisingly tricky the moment you try to draw them? This week, we’re zooming in on one small object made of interlocking parts. Think a metal bulldog clip (like my example), a clothespin, a stapler, a key on a ring, or nail clippers. 🎨 Your challenge: 1. Pick your object: Grab something small that has hinges, joints, or overlapping pieces. 2. Draw it 5 times: Fill a single page with 5 quick sketches of that same object. 3. Change the angle every time: Rotate it, turn it upside down, try an awkward perspective, or tilt it. Keep it loose! - Stick to simple contour lines: Don't worry about shading or surface textures; just trace the outlines and where the pieces join together. - Keep it fast: Spend around 3 minutes per sketch. - Ditch perfection: Use something that can't be erased and just let your lines be what they are. We're all about the looking and the seeing here! 👇 Drop a photo of your 5-angle page below. Can't wait to see what you chose!

@Beth Hempton haha… you are kind! I hadn’t picked up my drawing materials in a little while… so I felt a little rusty. I may try it again… I am learning there is benefit to doing things more than once.
