August often brings good size surf to Costa Rica against milder days heading into the rainy season. And after a quiet close to July, the Pacific has been in motion. So far in August large, strong storms have continued to move from the Southern Ocean into the Southwest Pacific. This will result in a series of more westerly SW swells that will start arriving early next week. These will grow in size across the region on Monday the 18th, with a peak on Tuesday into Wednesday morning the 19th-20th, with widespread head high surf. Tropical cyclone activity will be minimal to non-existent, which should mean standard light wind in the mornings with some onshore for the afternoon. Going further out, the wave forecast looks to build as we head into the second half of the month. There is a second storm that is likely to move from the Southern Ocean into the SW Pacific this weekend (16th-17th). This second storm will likely open up a more favorable pattern a little deeper in the month. Latin America should start seeing the SSW swell to close out the month (starting around the 26th) with solid potential. There is a good chance this will continue to deliver elevated SSW swell during the first 5-10 days of September.
