Guess the HF book from its one-star review! โญ
This is historical fiction. All guesses are encouraged (no googling, though!). This is meant to be fun. Don't be dismayed if you disagree with the review. Any spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are copied directly from the review. Iโ€™ll post the correct answer tomorrow (3rd June 2026). โญ This book was popular? As in a mini-phenomenon? Seriously? Am I being punked? Tell the truth--no one else read the book. It was all an elaborate media/pop culture scheme to trick me into reading this book. Please lie to me about this. I'm not sure I can go on living if I have to believe that this is what my fellow man is reading these days. My utter disdain for the book comes from many a source: A) It's 900 pages. Mind you, I'll read 900 pages, even 1,500 pages, if it's amazing. But it has to be a crackerjack of a book. This was not. B) Here's where this book and I really parted ways: [character 1]'s beloved wife, [character 2], dies in childbirth on the side of the road. Only hours later, [character 1]'s rolling in the leaves with an attractive forest wench in a sex scene so ridiculous I could practically hear the "bow-chicka-wow-wow" music in the background. Poor [character 2]'s body isn't even cold yet and [character 1]'s getting it on with a woman he had a 15 minute conversation with earlier in the book. C) It's hard to believe this is medieval England, what with all the modern sensibilities and modern vernacular. C) It could have been whittled down by about 500 pages if the scenes of people eating had been omitted. E) The women, oh, the women. Witches or whores or victims of tag team rape. Here's the basic rundown of the plot: --Building a church, building a church, building a church . . . --Oh, crap, a plot complication! We might not be able to build the church. --Crafty [character 1] overcomes the complication. --Insert licentious sex scene. --Building a church, building a church, building a church . . . --Oh, crap, a plot complication! We might not be able to build the church.

@Julie Furxhi You are spot on, I agree it is Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

UPDATED: Group Read of Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
The premise of Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke grabbed me: A tradwife social media influencer who wakes up one morning in the actual 1855! Enough of us are interested that we can make this work. Iโ€™ve bought a copy, but Iโ€™ll wait to read it until more of you have your hands on it. Weโ€™ll aim to discuss around the end of May. (Either by zoom or by text in here, weโ€™ll see.) Apparently, if you have a paid Spotify account, it's available as an audiobook! Itโ€™s also on Audible. Article about the book: https://www.motherjones.com/media/2026/04/trad-wife-caro-claire-burke-yesteryear-hannah-neeleman-anne-hathaway/

@Zena Ryder It sort of changes with what I am reading. I always find an author and then binge everything they wrote! ๐Ÿคฃ The most recent favorite was Lisa See and now I am on a Michelle Shocklee binge. Read Under the Tulip Tree and loved it. I am enjoying The Women of Oakridge, also by her, right now.
