In everyday conversation, “small business” sounds like a company with very little revenue. In government contracting, a business can earn millions and still qualify as small. The SBA uses your NAICS code and measures either your average annual revenue or number of employees. For example: - Roofing contractors: up to $19 million - Janitorial companies: up to $22 million - Local trucking companies: up to $34 million - Medical-supply wholesalers: up to 200 employees These are maximum limits-not what the average business earns. This matters because your size can determine whether you qualify for small-business set-asides and certifications. The SBA is considering changes to these standards, but nothing is final yet. What business do you own, want to start, or want to learn about? Comment below, and I’ll tell you whether its size is measured by revenue or employees.
