The owners of Rolling Stone magazine are suing Google over AI overviews.
Rolling Stone is suing Google. Why? Because Google's AI Overviews are giving people answers without sending them to the actual websites. Less traffic. Fewer clicks. More lawyers. Google, of course, says the opposite. They claim AI drives more traffic. Which feels a bit like being told losing your wallet builds character. What's interesting here is that someone with serious money is finally pushing back. Most of us just moan into our coffee. These folks are putting on the legal gloves and stepping into the ring. Are you worried about AI overviews taking traffic away? Read the article here - https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/777788/rolling-stone-penske-media-sue-google-ai-overviews

Personally I find that I do use Google AI to skip website visits - but these almost always aren’t visits that would result in sales. For instance, I needed to know how to unpair my Bluetooth headset this morning (having already wiped the phone, without thinking about unpairing) - and Google AI gave me the exact right answer, with no searching through unwanted info. I still like the brand (Shokz) and would buy them again - so you could say that Shokz server hasn’t had to bear the load of my query, without any consequent revenue. OTOH - they have a lost opportunity to push new products at me - whilst I tried to find what I wanted on their website. I guess it comes down to how helpful the manufacturer website is. For instance Apple support does it pretty well - and some of the engineering tools I use I’d never dream of going anywhere else but to their official website for answers. But plenty of websites make tech support low priority with dismal interfaces. And actually Google web tools are so dreadful - that I *always* go to AI for tech queries on them. Maybe that’s a deliberate eat-your-own-dogfood thing!
