Joy deepens when we stop carrying everything alone.
For me, being open to something greater means being open to God. Not as an abstract idea. As a grounding presence. When I remember I’m not the source of everything - not the answers, not the outcomes, not the control - something shifts. My nervous system settles. My perspective widens. Joy has room. Research supports this lived experience. A sense of transcendence - connection to something beyond ourselves - is linked to lower stress, greater meaning, and higher well-being. From a brain perspective, it helps move us out of constant vigilance and into trust. Joy doesn’t thrive when we’re clenched and carrying it all. Joy thrives when we’re open. For you, that “something greater” might be God, love, purpose, the universe, or a deep trust that life is held by more than just you. Whatever you call it, openness creates connection and connection is where joy lives. Joy isn’t something we generate. It’s something we receive when we stay open to something greater. How do you stay open to something greater?
