I'm so excited to start this new community and I hope I can bring you some valuable tips and tricks so you can make money doing something that you love. Introduce yourself and explain how you got started / interested in modding.
Hey everyone! I'm Austin - Gamer Ghosts Dad. I've had a lifelong love of consoles ever since having my first Intellivision II, and really grew up with the Genesis. My foray into modding started with the Saturn doing modchips. I did a lot of Gamecube modding right after Nintendo had essentially dropped it, lots of digital preservation of games. In the last year and a half I really leaned in to do advanced mods for every retro system I could. I really got big into Intellivisions (I created a composite mod board), Dreamcast, Gamecube, OG Xbox, but also did a number of N64, PS2, 360, PS3 consoles. HDMI mods, drive replacements, repairs, adressable LEDs mods, Fan mods, USB-C Mods, recaps. That was all fun and through that journey I found a bunch of gaps of needs and decided to start the Gamer Ghosts Shop to source extremely useful parts for repair and mods, at very comfortable prices. I'm really getting out of the hardware modding as my time for it is very limited and it's a tough space to be in - folks don't really pay for the time that goes into it when that time could be paid better doing other things. I still love it though and am a big advocate for new retro repair/mod/upgrade hardware on social platforms. I have a very minor social presence and am connected with a number of awesome repair shops in that space - mostly on X/Twitter but expanding out. I just made a big life move from blood sucking corporate consultancy technical work to starting my own contract work in the field. I'm hoping the shop provides some supplemental income and an outlet for things I enjoy while I build up my own business to feed the family. I appreciate the partnership (I know I've had conversation with Kenny and Steve separately) and help we can provide each other! Personally I'm a Dad of a 15 year old girl who thinks she's 25. I have 4 cats - I always think 3 too many as the litter boxes get changed but I love them all. I live in a small college town in western Kansas and where I often fly to Denver and to customer sites from there. I have a IT, Development, Technology background. Professionally I help customers implement a software called Workday, manage implementations and build technical teams and also do AI consulting.
