Tips for retaining information
I really struggle to take in and remember information - this might be a bit of daft question with no answer but are there any strategies I can use to take in information better that I am being taught on the mat?

Thank you this really helps! And actually it makes sense because the stuff that I know the reason for I’ve remembered better. And I’ll practice visualising more after the session. I’ll also try to link in with my game and remember easy check list’s for things like you said for outside passing and side control! Thanks 🙏

When working on your mindset, vagueness is your enemy
"I don't want to worry too much" is a very common answer I get when I coach confidence or resilience, and this answer is consistent with how most people think and talk to themselves. (including myself in the past). The more I work on my mindset and self-talk, the more I realise that definitions and words matter a lot! How you frame the first question guides the entire conversation you have with yourself. If you set your goal or expectations with vague language, you can't fully optimise for and know how much you have progressed. Another example would be: what's confidence? We all know what I am talking about, but if you want to optimise for Confidence without the clarity of what exactly it is, then what chances do you have to succeed? That's like going to the gym to be "stronger". Stronger how? What for? Maxing your PR with the bench press won't fully translate to grappling.

I like this. It ties in with what someone said to me last week as well around confidence. His coach said to him there is a difference between pseudo confidence and real confidence when competing and real confidence is competence. So I had been just haphazardly hyping myself up. Whereas this week i’ve been thinking less about hyping myself up and more about just repeating to myself you’re putting the work in so it will pay off in competency. And then reflecting after sessions on where has my competence improved to reinforce my confidence for my first comp coming up.

Also, side note I watched your wrestling 101 on the way to class today and was pushing forward like you said and it improved my game massively. I ended up getting 3 back takes when normally I’m just getting backed up and then loosing position!
