𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄) There's a version of perfectionism that masquerades as craft. It looks like responsibility. Like standards. Like taking the work seriously. And it can masquerade as all of those things for a very long time before you realize what it actually is: the avoidance of being judged. Editing is safe. Editing is private. An unfinished manuscript cannot be rejected or reviewed or misread. As long as you're still working on it, the outcome is still undetermined and therefore still potentially good. Publishing ends that. I've watched writers edit and re-edit manuscripts for years, convincing themselves each pass was necessary, when the reality was simpler and harder: they were terrified of releasing the work and the editorial process was a place to put that fear that looked like diligence. I've done it too. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 The question to ask yourself, honestly, is this: is this edit making the book better, or is it making me feel more ready? Those are not the same thing. And your nervous system cannot tell the difference between them because both produce the same temporary relief. You find a problem, you fix it, the anxiety lowers. Whether the fix was necessary is almost irrelevant to the feeling. The clearest signal that you've crossed from improvement into avoidance: you're fixing things that readers would not notice. The slightly off rhythm in a sentence in chapter eight. The word you've used four times in the entire manuscript. The background detail in a scene that's doing nothing wrong. These aren't craft problems. They're anxiety management. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 "𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵" 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 Good enough is not settling. It's an accurate assessment. A manuscript is ready when it delivers what it promised, the genre conventions are met, the characters earn their arcs, the prose is clean enough that it doesn't pull the reader out of the story, and the structural problems have been addressed. It does not mean every sentence is perfect. Perfect sentences exist in very few published books. They are not what readers are responding to when they say a book was unforgettable.

Weds June 10 - Day 8 - Marketing We covered a lot of this last night so tonight was mostly Show & Tell and Q& A Tuesday June 9 - Day 7 - Getting Your Story to Readers Tonight we'll talk about the various distribution methods and how to get folks to actually read your book. Friday June 5 - Day 5 I guess I should have just been doing reverse messages here. Live and learn. So today you should be essentially done and editting for quality and polishing for content. I crashed hard last night after the 8pm call and didnt get the midnight out. I'll take care of that shortly....and again I lost the 8pm call when we talked about editting and Pats really weird session with deepseek R1. I did a full post on that one below. Today is a travel day here and setting up for a craft faire that runs into the night today and a very long day tomorrow that will be our biggest show yet and we're both already exhausted and haven't even packed the car yet.
