🎨 ✨ WEEKLY PERFUMERY CHALLENGE: SMELL A COLOR — GOLD ✨
This week's challenge is going to test your creativity a little differently. There is no flower to recreate. No fragrance family to follow. No reference scent. Your inspiration is simply a color. 🟡 GOLD What does GOLD smell like to you? Don't think about what it should smell like. Think about what the color makes you feel. Close your eyes and imagine it. What textures come to mind? What temperature? What atmosphere? Is it bright or dark? Soft or powerful? Modern or ancient? Natural or abstract? Now take those thoughts and translate them into scent. THE RULES 1.) You may use a maximum of 7 materials. 2.) Your formula must total 100% 3.) There are no required materials and no restrictions on what you can use. 4.) Do not look at anyone else's formula until you've completed yours! 5.) When you submit your formula, tell us why your creation represents GOLD to you. There is no right or wrong answer. The purpose of this exercise is to practice one of the most important skills in creative perfumery: taking something that doesn't have an inherent smell and giving it an olfactory identity. Ten perfumers can look at the exact same color and imagine ten completely different scents. That's what I want to see. When you're finished, share your 7 materials (or fewer), your 100% formula, and the thought process behind your creation in the comments. Let's find out what GOLD smells like. 🟡✨👃

New Car Accord 🚗
Few aromas are as universally recognizable as the smell of a brand-new car. Ironically, there isn’t actually a single “new car” ingredient. What we associate with that luxurious scent is a blend of leather, vinyl, plastics, upholstery foam, rubber, polished trim, adhesives, and fresh textiles. In perfumery, recreating it isn’t about copying one material—it’s about convincing the brain that all of those elements are present at once. This accord focuses on the smooth, modern interior of a premium vehicle. Soft suede leather, clean vinyl, warm plastics, polished dashboard, fresh upholstery, and a subtle metallic freshness all come together to create something that feels remarkably realistic. The formula itself is surprisingly simple. Suederal LT provides the rich suede foundation, while Iso E Super creates the dry woody framework. Habanolide and Ethylene Brassylate add the clean fabric-like musk of new upholstery, Cyclamen Aldehyde and Helional bring the crisp “fresh off the showroom floor” effect, and tiny amounts of Safraleine and Isobutyl Quinoline add just enough realism to suggest leather without overpowering the composition. One of my favorite things about perfumery is that almost anything can become inspiration. We often think about flowers, fruits, and woods—but the scent of opening the door to a brand-new luxury car can be just as evocative. Sometimes perfumery isn’t about nature. Sometimes it’s about recreating a memory.

Weekly Challenge: Rose
🌹 WEEKLY PERFUMERY CHALLENGE #1 — ROSE I want to start a new weekly segment where I give you a perfumery exercise designed to help build your understanding of your materials, how they interact, and how you can approach an accord from different directions. There is no single “correct” answer. Follow the guidelines, experiment, and then share what you created in the comments! You can post your formula, talk about what worked (or what didn’t), and we can offer feedback, share ideas, or simply enjoy seeing how differently everyone approaches the same challenge. And for our first challenge, we’re starting with… 🌹 ROSE! Surprise, surprise. THE CHALLENGE Create a soft rose accord following these rules: 1. NO Citronellol, Geraniol, or Nerol. We’re taking away three of the most obvious building blocks of a traditional rose accord. 2. Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol is your only traditional rose material. PEA will be the foundation you’re allowed to work from. 3. You may choose ONLY 4 additional materials. That means your finished accord can contain a maximum of 5 materials total. Your goal isn’t necessarily to create the most photorealistic rose possible. Instead, think about what makes something feel like a soft rose. What gives it volume? What creates softness? What adds freshness or diffusion? What gives the flower character? Think creatively and use what you know about your materials. 🌹 Then share your formula in the comments! Tell us what materials you chose, why you chose them, and how the finished accord turned out. Let’s see how many different ways we can build a rose without relying on the obvious choices. Have fun—and don’t overthink it. Experiment!

Hi I am Tony , a beginner. I chose PEA, Eugenol, Beta Ionone, Hedione and gamma damascenone. 1. The PEA is a classic rosy note 2. Beta ionone gives a soft powdery and velvet petal quality 3. gamma damascenone gives a rrue rose character and adds diffusion with some fruity notes 4. Eugenol adds character 5. Hedione adds diffusion I could have chosen methyl diantilis instead of eugenol as it is a bit more soft and creamy, also geranyl acetate was an initial choice as it has a rosy character and slightly fruity, there are many choices but playing with the proportions and allowing for maceration of each trial is a bit time consuming as well as fun
